Chapter Eight

÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷

Cody slowly followed the orcs, unsure of what would happen if they found her. The darkness stank and the air burned her nose, but she pressed on.

'They won't harm you,' a small, wary voice spoke in the back of her mind, the home of the splinter, 'They have been given orders not to do so.'

'Quiet your tongue, snake!' Cody hissed, 'I have heard far too many poisoned words from you, words that may cost Frodo's life! So, I say again, away from me!'

'Yes Master,' She whimpered and went silent once more.

Cody felt a knew surge of energy spring forth from inside her when She called her "Master." She went from a walk to a jog and then into a sprint, trying to catch up with the orcs. She followed their path and she soon found herself inside of another cave. When she entered she stopped her run and entered cautiously. The air was moist and uncomfortable, she felt sticky and hot as she continued on. Soon, she came to a dead end and the chase was over. Cody stepped up to the wall and ran her hands over the smooth surface; she didn't know what she was looking for until her hand suddenly felt warm.

'Master, I speak the Black Tongue, tell me what to say.' She spoke.

Cody closed her eyes and sighed, keeping her hand on the rock as she thought. She didn't want to trust Her, but she knew she had to in order to get into Mordor. 'I'm the servant of the Witch King himself and I say open.' She flinched as she felt Her stir and take hold once more. She moved her face, involuntarily, closer to the rock and felt the coolness against her skin.

"'yk byn d'r qn'kt pwn dy m'k'asyyp' mlk zyk 'wn yk z'ágn 'p'n'n." She whispered onto the rock.

With a slight groan the rock rumbled opened just wide enough for a small person to slip between. In a flash, and a snap of her cloak, she squeezed through and continued on. Cody panicked when She stayed in control and began to fear that she had regained power. She sighed, however, when she felt Her go back into the corners of her mind.

'How much further until we reach Frodo?' Cody asked after some time.

'You're already there.' She replied simply.

Cody stopped dead in her tracks, mouth agape, when she reached the mouth of the tunnel. A horrifyingly beautiful fortress rested before her with a large tower in the middle. Yellow lights flickered in each of the rectangular windows; those lights would seem comforting in the Shire, but there, Cody felt as if eyes were watching her through each of those windows, waiting for the return of the faithful servant.

As Cody approached the evil fortress she noticed that everything was silent, no noise was to be heard in the evil place. The only things that appeared to be alive were the two gargoyles stationed at the entrance. They quivered in fear and let out yelps of pain as Cody neared them. One of them howled and rubbed its red, glowing eyes with its stone claws.

'Something has passed through here by force,' She explained, 'And what ever it was it had a power far greater than the guards.'

"Elf! Light!" they hissed in pain and disgust.

"Elf, light," Cody murmured, "Sam!" When she understood what had happened she raced inside, only to stop once again.

Her stomach churned and her nose wrinkled to try and keep out the foul stench. Orc bodies were strewn across the ground, many were missing limbs or had weapons protruding from their bodies. Some still had the look of battle plastered on their pale faces. The smell was unbearable and made Cody want to wretch. She, however, covered her nose with her cloak and continued on.

Suddenly, something grabbed her ankle and she gasped in shock as she felt the sharp nails scratch her skin. She looked down to see a dying orc with the look of pain in his eyes. She noticed that his left hand was gone and he had a dagger shoved deep into his chest. She hated the feeling, but she couldn't help but feel pity for the creature.

"Who are you?" he rasped.

"I'm Codalia Proudfoot, servant of the Witch King himself." she said in a calm voice. The orc suddenly laughed when she said this and smiled to reveal yellow teeth that were chipped and rotten.

"I can now say I've met the great servant who is supposed help us all in this battle." He laughed, only to go into a fit of coughing that left him breathless. Cody knelt down and gently removed his hand from her ankle.

"Sh," she soothed, "Go forth from this foul place and may you find peace." She watched as the orc let out his last breathe, his eyes still wide open. Without a second thought, she reached out and closed his eyelids so he appeared to be sleeping.

When she stood up she said to no one in particular, "Even the most foul of creatures deserves at least an ounce of respect. They were fighting in a cause that they believed to be right, even if it wasn't to us." When she had finished she looked around and she looked at the scene before her in a new light. "All of these deaths and none of them will have proper graves. At the most, if the Ring is destroyed, they will be burned, but even that wont be in respect." With a final sigh, she turned around and continued towards the door that lead up the tower.

"Servant!" Cody turned around when she heard someone call to her in the Black Tongue. A creature Cody had not seen before approached her at a light jog. He was tall like that of an elf, but instead of being slender and elegant he was broad shouldered and stocky. He was of a darker complexion, like tanned leather and his hair was the color of cultivated soil. His eyes were small and were as black as jet for they were filled with evil and hatred for all that was good. His mouth was filled with small, sharp teeth that gleamed in red, hazy light of Mordor.

'He's an Uruk-Hai, one of the creatures Saramaun has bred for his own purposes.' She explained.

"My Lady," he said, but the name did not sound right coming from this creature, "What are you doing out here in this courtyard? Surely you did not take place in this ridicules fight over nonsense?"

"No, of course not, I only just arrived." Cody replied. "Why are the guards speaking of an elf? Has one managed to break the barrier that keeps our enemies out?"

"Yes, he used some sort of magic to break in and steal the prisoner. He was the same one who killed Shelob and used the light that we all saw from afar. These stupid orcs killed themselves before he showed up though, making his work easy."

"And why didn't you stop him if you are the only one alive?"

"I have just arrived as well, I was sent to collect and take you to the Witch King."

"Collect me, why does he need to see me? He knows my purpose here is to take the Ring and bring the hobbit that bears it to him."

"An order is an order and I'm only trying to following it." he explained.

"I understand that, but I must follow the orders that he gave me nearly seventeen years ago that I have not been able to follow until now. Now, take me to the hobbit and and the elf so I can fulfill that order."

"And to where are they going, exactly?"

"Well, isn't it obvious? They are heading towards Mount Doom to destroy the only thing that is keeping the very fabrics of Mordor together. Without that Ring, Mordor will crumble into dust and become nothing more than a baren wasteland."

"I didn't realize the seriousness behind this, please right this way." The Uruk-Hai walked across the courtyard with ease and began to unlock a door in the side of the great wall. "Are you coming?" he called.

"Of course!" she replied and scurried towards him, taking care to not step on the dead. As she approached the Uruk-Hai he opened a stone door that was meant to look like part of the wall. She gasped when she saw the landscape before her for she had never seen anything like it.

"Servant of the Witch King," the Uruk-Hai said, "I give you the land of Mordor.
