When Reyna landed in San Juan, the realization of her break-up with Asher finally hit her. It had been a real break-up, not a break. The locals and tourists stared at her as she walked past them. Reyna knew she looked out of place. She was all by herself, and trying hard not to cry. Still, she was 18, and technically of age.
She walked and walked and walked until she finally reached her old house. (I think it blew up in the Heroes Of Olympus, but I'm not really sure, so I'll just put this here.)
Twang! An arrow whizzed by, narrowly missing Reyna's head. She pulled out her spear and got ready for a fight. Instead Thalia appeared.
"Thals? What are you doing here?" Reyna asked, hugging the daughter of Zeus. Thalia hugged her back.
"The Hunters and the Amazons have made this their permanent base!" Thalia said. Then she asked "Do you happen to know where Hylla is? She went to some castle and never wrote back to us."
Reyna felt her tears leak out. She took a deep breath and said "Hylla's gone."
"G-gone? Like...dead? Hylla's dead?" Thalia asked disbelievingly. Reyna nodded sadly. Unexpectedly, Thalia hugged her again.
"You must be feeling so bad right now. C'mon, let's go in." Thalia said. Reyna followed and gasped as she walked in. The whole house was redecorated. The walls had been painted light beige, there were plants around every corner, and the fireplace had been set up and was crackling. Above the fireplace was a framed photo of Zoe.
"Hylla's photo will go up there too." Thalia whispered softly. Suddenly, hunters and Amazons began pouring out of other rooms, and once they saw Reyna, they broke out into smiles.
"Go upstairs to your old room. I'll tell them the news." Thalia said to Reyna as people began swarming around them. Reyna nodded gratefully and headed up the stairs to her room. A wave of nostalgia washed over her. She remembered those very steps, the same ones she and Hylla would slide down, and the same ones she had tripped over because Hylla had accidentally nudged her.
Reyna would've given anything in that moment to have Hylla walking up those steps with her.
She reached her room and sat down on the dusty bed. She tried to drown out all the noise. Especially when gasps came from downstairs, telling Reyna that all of them had heard the news.
"Reyna, can you come down for a second?" Voices called out. Reyna sighed and made her way down.
"Is it true? Hylla has...p-passed?" A girl asked. Reyna nodded slowly. The girl burst into tears. A lot of the other people did the same. Finally, one girl wiped all her tears away.
"Are you going to be our queen then?" The girl asked. Reyna was taken back. She thought of refusing. They could find another queen. And she couldn't even think about taking Hylla's place. But then Reyna looked at the Amazon's faces. They needed a leader.
"Yes, if everyone will accept." Nods came from every direction as soon as she said it. Thalia left and came back with a shimmering golden belt.
"This is the belt of the queen of Amazons. It's yours now." Reyna thanked her and put the belt on. Instantly, she felt stronger.
And so began the reign of Queen Reyna.
