Over the next month Neteyam and Aonung spent every day together learning.
Today they sat on the beach, hidden behind a palm tree.
Neteyam resting between Aonungs legs, he stroked his hair gently as he spoke.
For Neteyam to understand the great connection a bond with a Tulkun gives, he had to know the history of it.
"Many years ago, when this clan was just starting. A group of strange massive whale like creatures showed up in our waters inside the reef" Aonung explained
"The Chief at the time forbid the clan from going in the waters while the creatures were in it. They were only there for a day and once they left, the village went about their days as normal. Two years later those same creatures returned to the waters. The Chief grew curious, as the creatures would come as close as they could to the beaches. So that day he went out on his ilu, coming face to face with one of the creatures" he continued
"The creature looked at him, singing a beautiful song. The Chief joined in with the creature, signing the song alongside it. Hours passed, and the Chief grew very close to the creature. He could understand what it was saying to him by the tones of the squeaks the creature sung. Until the creature opened its mouth. The Chief was curious and swam inside, to be met with the creatures tsaheylu at the roof of its mouth. The Chief took his own tsaheylu, connecting it with the creature. He learnt that the creature was a Tulkun. A very spiritual mammal that occupied the waters. The Tulkun and its pod returned every two years to the village, to meet the new Navi, learn about their upbringings, their way of life. The Tulkuns name was Ne'rali. The Chief and Ne'rali created a special bond like no other. The Chief wanted to share this with his clan, so two years later when the Tulkun returned, he ushered his people to go and find a creature that spoke to them in a way no other creature had before. It is a tradition done for many centuries, Navi and Tulkun bonding spiritual, learning from each other" Aonung finished, looking down at Neteyam with a wide smile.
"That story is beautiful Nung. That Chief was very brave for trusting such a big creature with his life. Spiritual connection is very important" Netayam smiled
"It is, that's why every two years, we meet with our spirit brothers and sisters, telling them everything new that had happened in the last two years. In return they give us their stories and protect the clan from predators surrounding the reef" Aonung smiled
"And I qualify to bond with one?" Netayam asked
"Yes you do" Aonung replied
"Why me and not my family too?" Netayam asked
"As my mother said, you have learnt and mastered everything you need to know physically of our culture. Your family has not quite got there yet. You will be able to bond with a Tulkun to give you the spiritual connection to our culture. My mother thinks your ready" Aonung explained.
"When are they returning?" Neteyam asked
"Next week. That's why my parents have me teaching you about the Tulkun, and they are getting your family to help the prepare for the celebration afterwards" Aonung said
"When they do return, how will I know which Tulkun has an interest in me?" Netayam asked
"There's no real way to explain it. You will just know" Aonung smiled, leaning down to kiss Neteyams neck gently. "Kind of like how we knew each other before we met" he added smiling.
"Yeah like that" Neteyam smiled turning his head to kiss Aonungs lips.
The two stayed like that, comfortably making out. Hidden from prying eyes.
Neteyam learnt everything he needed to know about the bond with a Tulkun.
Aonung helped him through the mental side of it, explaining how it works and what happens after.
Neteyam was exited. He was excited to bond with one of the creatures, create a spiritual connection with one.
He couldn't wait for next week.

Short chapter I know, I just wanted to create a little backstory of the bond with a Tulkun and a Navi.
