Azriel became a regular part of my life for the next month or so. We'd meet on the way to school, he'd come with me to drop off Cas and then he'd come over in the evening just after Cas had gone to bed.
One of the best things was waking up next to him, feeling him hold me so tenderly. It was something else and I always felt a little sad when he left in the early hours to do his Spymaster duties.
"you sure you have to go?" I murmured as I watched him pull on his clothes, body tangled in the sheets, leeching the warmth he'd left.
"I'll see you tonight" he promised, leaning down to press a kiss to my head, and I caught his shoulder, kissing him properly, he sighed against my mouth, running a hand down my side. "Cauldron you make this the hardest part of my day" I giggled quietly, not wanting to wake up Cas.
"It'll make you look forward to seeing me later" his eyes glittered and he leaned over my body, pressing lightly kisses over my face.
"I always look forward to seeing you"
"sap" I teased and he nibbled my ear playfully.
"love you, see you later"
"stay safe love" and with a final kiss he was gone, off to wherever Rhys needed him.
It was early in the morning, probably about 4am but I got up, making myself some tea as I sat on the balcony. I stayed there, watching the light creep over the city and the stars fade. Wondering where my love had gone off to today.
Soft footsteps pattered on wooden floor, and I turned my head to see a sleepy Cas appear, waddling over to me and he crawled into my arms, settling his little body against mine.
"Morning baby, sleep well?" he nodded into my chest, and I rubbed my hand up and down his back, carrying him to the kitchen. "What do you want for breakfast?"
"oats" his little voice mumbled, and I smiled, kissing the top of his head.
"okay" he hung off me as I made his breakfast. Oats with honey and milk, a few strawberries on the side seeing as they were in season. We sat at the table as he ate, watching him begin to wake as he spooned the food into his mouth.
"where's Azzie?" he asked as we held hands, walking down the cobbled streets.
"he's on a special mission with Rhys and Cas"
"doing what?"
"I don't know love, who are you sitting with at lunch today?" I redirected and he began telling me about his friend Brandon, and Renee. "Oh and is Renee a girl?" I teased down at him, watching the blush spread over his face as he protested, humming knowingly.
"Al" he whined, and I grinned, relenting.
We made it to the door, his teacher, Mallery, ushering him inside before she turned to me.
"we're doing a project this week about family trees" my heart fluttered nervously "I just wanted to let you know, so that maybe you guys can have a chat about it beforehand?"
"yeah of course. Thank you for letting me know" she smiled, and I left, mulling it over in my head as I walked home.
Cas and I hadn't talked about our parents before. He was a newborn when they left, and I'd always raised him as my brother, or a son. I don't know. In my mind he was my brother, but I did everything I could to make him feel normal, to make him feel like he was cared for, and special. I just- I didn't know what to say. How to tell him our parents had gone to fight only to die. How they abandoned us.
The shadows sensed my unease, brushing against my cheek and I smiled, brushing over them softly.
"I'm okay, just thinking" they slithered against my collarbones, and I opened the door to the shop.
