Two years later

"Luce?" Kate called out as she walked into their house, holding Malia's hand and carrying their one year old son on her hip.

The house was quiet and it made Kate feel uneasy, but then she heard the sound of the shower in the bathroom upstairs and she relaxed a little.

"Malia, go play in the living room." Kate said softly, shutting the front door and shifting her son.

Malia nodded and skipped into the living room, sitting down to play with her dolls.

Making her way upstairs, Kate placed the little boy in his crib before making her way to the room she shared with Lucy.

Lucy was in the ensuite, not able to hear anything over the running water.

Stepping into the bathroom, Kate leaned against the counter and smiled. "Luce." She called out over the running water.

Lucy near enough had a heart attack, she jumped around in surprise, nearly slipping. "God, Kate don't do that."

Smirking, Kate crossed her arms over her chest. "We have to get ready to go to Jane's soon."

"Why do you think I'm in the shower?" Lucy asked, raising her eyebrow. "I'm getting ready."

The blonde tilted her head to the side. "You get to change Noah and get him ready too." She said with a shrug.

Lucy pouted. "He always puts up such a fight when I get him ready."

Kate grinned as she looked at her wife. "I think you'll manage."

"He tried to bite me last time." Lucy said, holding her arm up.

"You act like our son is a vicious animal." Kate said with a sigh before shaking her head. "Forget it, I'll get him ready." She left the bathroom.

Lucy frowned, dropping her arm. Was Kate mad at her? Finishing her shower quickly, she stepped out and got dried off before getting dressed. Heading to her son's room she found him asleep in his crib.

The one year old was curled up in the crib, his nose scrunching adorably as he dreamed. He seemed like a little angel but for some reason he just didn't like Lucy, they hadn't bonded the way he'd bonded with Kate.

Kate made her way into the room a few minutes later. Moving over to the dresser to grab a change of clothes for Noah. "Can you at least get Malia ready?" She asked quietly.

"I'll dress Noah." Lucy said softly. "I'm sorry for being dramatic earlier."

Kate closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "You don't love him." she whispered.

"I do love him. We just... we haven't bonded the way you and him have." Lucy said, looking down.

Turning to face her, Kate swallowed thickly. "You haven't tried."

"I have. He just cries." Lucy breathed.

Kate fought back tears as she stared at Lucy. "Because I was the one feeding him and taking care of him when he was first born."

Lucy rubbed her temples with the tips of her fingers, looking stressed. Tears began to fall down her cheeks. "I'm sorry I was struggling."

"Struggling? Lucy, I was the one that gave birth and I was depressed but I didn't have you to lean on. And now, it feels like I still don't have you." Kate breathed out, shaking her head.

"You do have me." Lucy breathed, lifting her head. "I was just... processing the fact that half my family had died in a shooting... I was scared they'd come for us... and I didn't tell you because I didn't want to freak you out because I don't talk about them."
