It was almost a 3-hour drive to Nueva Ecija, and we have an hour left before we arrive at Professor Del Mundo's house. After we grabbed some breakfast-to-go food, the trip finally started.
The whole ride, I tried to stop myself from smiling because of her. As we were listening to some songs, she kept on singing along and it was like she was pouring her heart out, and I'm not gonna lie, she has an amazing voice.
"Aren't you tired yet?" She asks all of a sudden, "It's okay if you'll sleep."
"Hindi naman. Pero baka kayo ang pagod, you've been driving for hours. Pwede naman akong mag-drive, Professor Del Mundo."
Umiling naman siya, "I'm used to this. It doesn't tire me unless I drove for 12 hours straight."
"Kayo po siguro yung laging nagd-drive pag may gala kayo ng ibang Professors 'no?" Biro ko, pero mukhang totoo ata dahil tumango ito ng dalawang beses.
"They're lazy," She laughed, "Cali uses every existing reason just so she wouldn't be able to drive, ang ginagawa niya, she assigns whose driving and car we'll be using. She doesn't dare to point Solana because she's quite scared of her. Alam naman naming lahat that Solana will never drive for us, especially if it's a long trip."
Hearing her stories about her co-professors whom she considers as her friends made me get to know their dynamics even more, though I'm also curious if she has other friends aside from them. Sila-sila lang kasi ang lagi kong nakikita na magkakasama.
Patuloy kaming nakikinig ng mga kanta habang nasa byahe. Unconsciously, I yawned for a few seconds at mukhang napansin niya ito dahil tumingin ito sa'kin.
"Huwag mo nang labanan ang antok mo, Ms. Luceria." She said, "I'll wake you up once we've arrived."
"Hindi po ako antok."
"You need to preserve your energy for later, my family is quite a handful." Tawa niya pa, "I won't be bored if that's what you're worried about."
Totoo din naman, when she said that it was better to have someone to drive with, I felt that it's because she's usually lonely and bored when alone.
Sa huli ay wala na rin akong nagawa dahil inaantok nga ako pag hindi ako yung nagd-drive. Marahan akong napapikit na lamang hanggang sa tuluyan na akong nakatulog.
An hour later..
"Vivien! Naku, hindi ka po nagpasabi na uuwi ka pala ngayon."
"Pasensya na po, Manang. I was too busy with work para ipaalam pa na pupunta ako dito. Sila Mom and Dad pala?"
"Ay nasa Farm, kasalukuyan kasing naghaharvest ng mga pananim kaya nandoon sila para suriin ito. Sigurado akong magugulat sila sa pagpunta mo."
I was woken up in trance when I heard faint noises outside the car, napatingin pa ako sa paligid ko dahil nakatigil na ang sasakyan. As I moved to look around, a soft fabric slid down on my lap.
A blanket?
That's why I was warm the whole time I was asleep.
"May kasama ka pala?" Napatingin ako sa gawi nila Professor Del Mundo and I saw an old lady that looks like she's in her 70's. Parehas silang tumingin sa'kin kaya ngumiti naman ako ng may pagka-alanganin.
