    Her heart hammered in her ears as the two cats babbled to her about their lives. She didn't know these cats, yet they spoke to her as though they were great friends. She backed up, noticing the hurt flash in their eyes.
    "Who are you?" she spat, inching closer to her mother.
    "You don't... know?" Disbelief was raw in the tom's voice. He shared a troubled look with his companion.
    "No. Am I supposed to know?"
