Chapter 3: A Ray of Hope
The morning light streamed through the curtains, casting a golden glow across the bedroom. New blinked his eyes open, stretching lazily under the blanket.
Then he remembered.
Tay. Kitchen. Smiling.
No, that couldn’t be right. He must have been dreaming. Tay never smiled. But as New sat up and rubbed his sleepy eyes, the faint sound of utensils clinking in the kitchen reached his ears.
His heart pounded.
He scrambled out of bed, still in his oversized t-shirt, and rushed toward the kitchen.
There he was. Tay. Standing by the stove, pouring coffee into a mug, his expression relaxed—almost at peace.
Was this real?
New stared, wide-eyed. He had lived in this house for six months, and not once had he ever seen Tay in the kitchen. And now… now he was making breakfast?
Tay turned his head and caught New staring. He raised an eyebrow. "What?"
New shook his head quickly. "You... you're in the kitchen."
"I can see that." Tay took a sip of his coffee, then gestured toward the counter. "Eat. We’re leaving for school in an hour."
New hesitated before slowly walking toward the table. A simple breakfast of toast, eggs, and a glass of milk was placed neatly on a plate. He made this? For me?
New sat down, staring at the food. He was so used to eating alone. So used to being ignored. This... this was different.
Tay noticed his hesitation. "Are you waiting for an invitation? Eat."
New quickly picked up the toast and took a small bite, his eyes still fixed on Tay.
The older man leaned against the counter, sipping his coffee. His usual cold, unreadable expression was still there, but something felt different.
New swallowed and whispered, "Good morning."
Tay looked at him for a second, then gave a small nod. "Good morning."
New nearly choked on his food. He had said it back.
This was progress.
As he ate, his heart felt lighter than it had in months. It wasn’t love, not yet—but it was something.
And for now, that was enough.
