Dawn rose in the forests of clan Mossflower, illuminating the lush green leaves with bright sunlight.
The sunlight usually brought hope and peace to those in the kingdom, but now, it was only another agonizing day for the captives.
A group of weasels slithered by, chittering and hissing sharply at any cat who lay still even for a moment.
They were so focused on the slaves that none noticed the mud-covered shapes pad quietly behind thick bushes.
"I am going to drown myself in the pond back at Dawnclan." Sagepelt peaked out of the leaves, then lowered himself out of view when a fox turned to sniff the air.
"I thought you hated water." Hazelpaw stared at the knight, mildly surprised. He too, was covered in pondweed and muck to hide his scent.
"Well, I've found something I hate more than water," Sagepelt grumbled.
"And that's dried mud all over my gorgeous fur."
"Meesa liken the mud." Hareflop bounced a little.
"It comfy."
"I'll never understand you Gungans." Sagepelt sighed.
"Come on, let's see if Heatherstar made any progress."
Sagepelt, Hazelpaw, and Hareflop raced quietly into the undergrowth that led to a hidden cave.
Hazelpaw halted in front of the entrance, then brushed the thick ferns aside.
The indistinct chatter of many cats could be heard, and surrounded by them, was Heatherstar herself, currently busy teaching the plan to the crowd.
"She's definitely made progress." Sagepelt mewed, astonished.
"Sagepelt, Hazelpaw, these cats are my surviving warriors who are willing to fight for their home." Heatherstar acknowledged them with a flick of her tail.
"Have you worked out on the plan yet?" Hazelpaw asked the queen, who nodded.
"Captain Kitescratch here has found out where Direstar is now, and if we capture him and force him to surrender, it will all be over," Heatherstar replied, then pointed at a battle-scarred tortoiseshell she-cat, who nodded curtly.
"Come sit with us. I will tell you everything I have planned."
"Currently, Direstar is in my den, watching the Mutts patrol Mossflower territory." Heatherstar mewed.
"It is located near Duskwater Cliff-"
"Do you mean the one at Tribe Dune or the one near Sunrocks?" a warrior asked.
Heatherstar sighed, her tail tip twitching irritably.
"The one near Sunrocks, Minnowflip." she hissed.
"Oh."
"Anyway, Kitescratch's battalion and Reedsplash's would be a diversion, so I could slip inside and make Direstar surrender."
"The Mutts are mainly standing guard around the cave, and if we attack, the majority of them will come," Kitescratch growled.
"Is everything clear?"
A series of hushed meows of agreement followed the words.
"Hang on," Sagepelt's eyes suddenly lit up.
"Heatherstar, when you go to the cave, take us with you." he mewed.
"Sure, but why?" Heatherstar stared at him questioningly.
