"Later tonight. I promise", you told Hobie taking his face in your hand. You regretfully had to explain that Janice wasn't going to take no for an answer. They expected you both at the restaurant in less than an hour.
"I'll hold you to that", he replied gently kissing your lips. The two of you part having to quickly get ready for a fancy dinner date. Although you had promised Hobie later that didn't mean you couldn't tease him until then. You picked out a red dress you had saved for an occasion like this. The shade dangerously close to that of his spidersuit.
Something you'd learnt about him was he adored you in his clothes, he also always loved when you wore red. Not that he ever verbally confirmed it. He was just terrible at hiding things. After applying some make up and tidying your hair you met him in the kitchen. Struggling slightly with his tie. He swore he knew how to tie one. Yet always seemed to forget when it came to actually wearing one.
"Let me", you interrupted his clear struggle taking the tie.
"You look amazing Y/N", he whispered as you tied his tie.
"You don't clean up too bad either handsome", you replied kissing him gently. Although you were in heels you still and to stand on your tip toes. His hands trailed down your body feeling each curve hugged by your dress.
"Please tell me it's not too late to cancel", he begged pulling away from the kiss.
"If we don't leave now we will be late", you replied suddenly noticing the late time.
Hobie scooped you up carrying you bridal style.
"Traffic will be a nightmare. Do you trust me?", he asked opening a window."Hobie. Don't you dare", but before you could argue further he dropped you from the tall building, jumping out with you. Catching you effortlessly he swung to the next building with you clinging to him for dear life.
"You're awful Hobie", you yelled hitting his chest your voice barely audible against the rushing wind.
"I love you too", he replied teasingly as if he couldn't hear you. You knew this was his form of punishment for you answering that call.
You arrived at the restaurant right on seven. Janice and Lyle were already inside. Janice waving you both over, her smile dropping a little the longer she looked at you.
"Your hair's a little bit of a mess Y/N", Janice whispered to you grabbing your hand and dragging you to the bathroom to fix it.
"I tried to style it before you called but... Hobie likes to mess it up", you half lied with a laugh, trying to deter her from further questions. Its not like you could tell her it was nice when you left only for it to get messed up by swinging around New York. She stood you in front of the mirror as she began trying to fix all the frizz and displaced hair.
She only nodded in response, clearly not fully accepting the answer.
"I didn't see the car out the front, you got here in good time", she continued. God you just wanted her to stop talking. You had to come up with things on the spot. If she asked Hobie and he had different answers it'd be obvious you were lying. She was behaving so strangely, they had never been suspicious before. But the way she's speaking now is as if she already knows Hobie is Spiderman.
"Yeah we got a taxi, in case we drink tonight", you rambled hoping she would just accept that answer.
"Anyway you're done shall we head back", she replied suddenly dropping the topic all together.
Something was off about her, normally she wouldn't pry. You could tell she was suspicious. She knew something was up but it seemed even she wasn't sure what to make of that suspicion.
You returned to the others still feeling Janice's unnerved stare. It was as if she was trying read your mind. You could practically hear her brain working to make sense of it all.
Hobie too had picked up on Janice's odd behaviour. Taking your hand in his he gave it a gentle squeeze of reassurance. The small gesture allowed you to relax for a moment. How you just wished the night could be over with.
The night continued without a hitch. It seemed only you and Hobie had picked up on the apprehensive behaviour from Janice, Lyle either ignored it, or simply didn't even notice.
Bidding your farewells to the pair, you finally felt the weight lift from your chest. Hobie seemed to feel it too as he squeezed you hand tighter, silently communicating the relief that it was over.
The two of you began the walk home, both reluctant to take the risky way.
"So what happened?" He asked.
"Janice knows somethings up. She seems confused but so suspicious of us at the same time", you explained. Hobie nodded in response remaining silent, as if trying to put the pieces together himself.
You continued in silence both of you trapped your thoughts. Eventually Hobie spoke up as you neared your home."We shouldn't worry too much about this. She'll probably drop her suspicions on her own", he said.
Right now, you wanted nothing more than to know what they're thinking. She knew something, you didn't know what, yet it seemed she didn't know either.
Thankfully it was unlikely you would see Janice again before the work meeting. That gave you almost two weeks to try and work out what was going on, and time for her to forget about any suspicions.
Entering your apartment the two of you were greeted by your cat. Or you were greeted by the cat.
"I don't understand. I literally brought 'em home why do they like you more", Hobie rambled. Jealous of the attention you got from the cat.
"What can I say. I'm just more loveable", you joked as the cat left. You could feel Hobies gaze on you the entire time, partially endearment and still a little jealousy.
You wrapped your arms around Hobies torso resting your head on his chest. Returning the gesture Hobie wrapped an arm around you, fidgeting with your hair.
After a night of worry and discomfort, being home with Hobie made all the negativity melt away.
And you had a promise to keep.
