CHAPTER THREE; remember when you said that you wanted to give me the world

( a latte with a side of cryptic warnings )

[ ʚїɞ ]

ELIZABETH SUSPECTED that she must've looked shaken up when she returned to the car, because both Isabella and Mr Anderson turned in their seats to stare at her with worried and wide eyes. Ignoring the fact that she and her sister often ( by accident ) brought mud into the car on rainy days, Elizabeth settled herself onto the floor of the car, folding her knees to her chest.

Mr Anderson knowingly tucked his daughter's hair behind her ear ( which, at the moment, was exactly what she needed ) and asked, "You need your daily coffee break, don't you?"

Instantly, Isabella said, "Yes, definitely!"

Elizabeth, too, nodded.

Pushing the car door open, Mr Anderson stepped out of the car. "Well, come on then, there's a cafe right across the street."

Isabella followed, and so did Elizabeth.

As their father had said, the coffee shop was not very far away. It was decently sized, and inside were booths and round tables, most of them occupied. A familiar phone case caught Elizabeth's attention as she scanned the interior of the shop, but there was a sudden flash of red hair as someone pushed past Isabella to leave. And when she looked back, it was gone.

Mr Anderson pushed the door open again, and an inviting chime echoed from the bell hanging overhead.

"Hello, welcome to Weathervane!" a tall boy called from behind the counter. He offered them a smile, his light green eyes shining under the sunlight as he absentmindedly ran a hand through his curly brown hair.

Isabella beamed at Elizabeth, who rolled her eyes. They had officially been in Jericho for less than five minutes and her sister was already boy crazy.

"Whatever, go for it, you're going to be here for a while anyway," Elizabeth said.

"Well, at least I might find someone worth staying for," Isabella replied, nudging her sister with a grin before she headed up to the counter.

Elizabeth sighed and ended up roaming around the shop, searching for an empty booth. She had found several already, but she felt it would be too soon to succumb to the boredom of sitting.

She had just passed by an occupied booth when she heard a familiar voice.

"Heather, I don't know what to do! I have no idea what came over Calvin . . . and I just feel so bad for Lizzie, she didn't do anything wrong!"

All of the pieces started fitting together inside Elizabeth's head — the fluffy white sweater with the big red heart in front, the pastel pink miniskirt, the pretty boots with small platforms, and the phone case with swirly pink hearts — and who else would be calling Heather to complain about what Calvin did?
