CHAPTER SEVEN; why do you call me and tell me you want me back

( a walk with the new girl )

[ ʚїɞ ]

THORNHILL GAVE Elizabeth two more days to make her decision in the chaos of getting a new roommate. Thankfully, though it was obvious that the teacher was only hoping that Wednesday's disagreeable nature would be offensive or trigger some sort of memory explaining why it was so important for Mrs Anderson to warn Elizabeth to stay away from the Addams.

Truthfully, it was quite the opposite.

It wasn't just because of the warning that Elizabeth was trying to avoid Wednesday. It was because the less she knew about the girl, the easier it was to make her decision and the less Thornhill could use the girl to her advantage.

But it was a lot harder than expected.

That girl had a strange charm.

"Nevermore was founded in 1791 to educate people like us," Enid explained, "—Outcasts, freaks, monsters . . . fill in your favorite marginalized group here."

As they passed by the trophy case, Wednesday paused suddenly, Elizabeth almost crashing into the petite girl. She followed her gaze to a black and white photograph, and she felt her jaw drop as she recognized it.

"What?" Wednesday said, eying Elizabeth suspiciously.

"Nevermore's Fencing Squad of 1998," Elizabeth whispered. "My mom has—I mean, had—a copy of that picture at our house."

Wednesday's gaze softened for a brief moment before she scowled again. She sighed, then said, "I know both of you are supposed to be giving me a tour, but you can save the sanitized sales pitch. Unless you have detailed information about weaknesses in the school's security system." At Enid's confusion, she added, "I don't plan on staying here long."

Enid pouted. "Why not?"

"Because this was my parents' idea," Wednesday responded. "They've been looking for any excuse to send me here."

"That I can relate to," Elizabeth mumbled.

"It's part of their nefarious yet completely obvious plan."

"Okay, I'll bite," Enid said. "What plan?"

"To turn me into a version of themselves."

"In that case, maybe you can clear something up," Enid suggested. "Rumor's been swirling you killed a kid at your old school and your parents pulled strings to get you off."

Elizabeth rolled her eyes. "Knowing her, it was probably more than one," she whispered just loud enough for Enid to hear.

"Actually, it was two kids, but who's counting?" Wednesday deadpans.
