( finding nevermore )

SHE COULDN'T seem to push Cecelia's sinister words out of her mind.

"If I were you, I'd stay as far away from my mom as I could."

Now that Elizabeth was fixated on this message, she came to the realization that she had never met Cecelia's mother. Never saw her at any of the school events, not at the honor roll celebrations, not even at a restaurant. Either Cecelia was with her huge group of friends, her partner, or she was alone.

To be fair, though, Cecelia had never met Elizabeth's mother either, but that was for a valid reason. She doubted that visiting Jericho to visit her mother at the police station would be Cece's idea of a romantic date.

Besides, Elizabeth had explained this to Cece, who seemed relieved to not go back to Jericho, where she had spent most of her life.

But on the other hand, Elizabeth had no idea why she had never met her girlfriend's mother, or why she was told to stay away.

Mr Anderson pulled the car through the dark, iron gate, and Elizabeth could see her sister shiver in the front seat. Though she found it a little offending, she could get why.

The ominous feelings she got from this place were overwhelming.

THERE WAS an odd sort of satisfaction in watching her father wrestle her largest suitcase free from the trunk.

If he hadn't decided to send her away in the first place, there wouldn't be this epic struggle with the luggage.

But it was the sight of the drops of sweat gleaming against her dad's graying hair that she decided that part of her did feel bad. Channeling her focus on the suitcase, Elizabeth snapped her fingers. It levitated into the air, tilted onto its side—to avoid smacking her dad in the face—and floated toward her. With another snap, it settled onto the pavement, upright again.

Mr Anderson straightened. "Thanks, Lizzie," he said.

In the surprise that her father had thanked her, Elizabeth dropped her mental blocking that usually silenced all of the chaotic minds around her. But now that it was down, everything slammed into her mind at once.

New students crying about worries.

Siblings throwing back and forth insults.

Most of all, though, her dad's thoughts hit her hard.
