CHAPTER TEN; in the puzzle of the teenage mind

( a forgotten memory )

[ ʚїɞ ]

ELIZABETH WATCHED the petite girl sitting on the infirmary cot front of her. She seemed so unfamiliar all of a sudden, her arms crossed as usual but without her scathing remarks and fixed scowl. In the absence of her usual behavior, she almost looked upset.

Almost.

Wednesday met Elizabeth's gaze. "Why don't you remember?"

"Remember what?" Elizabeth asked.

"The day we were talking about," Wednesday responded, her eyebrows pulling together to form a small crease in between. "You looked confused the entire time."

"It's . . . blurry. And most of it just . . . doesn't exist," Elizabeth admitted.

"Can't you use your telepathy to find it in my mind?" Wednesday asked.

"I could try," Elizabeth said, "If you're fine with that."

"What's the harm?" Wednesday asked. "Oh, you're the sort of people that rely on physical contact, aren't you?"

"I can read minds as long as that person's near me," Elizabeth said, "Though the strength of the connection does sometimes depend on contact." She paused for a moment. "I suppose physical contact is beneficial when I'm looking for not just thoughts but memories. Especially since it's one from a while ago."

Wednesday sighed and offered her hands to Elizabeth. "Would this help?"

"Probably?"

Elizabeth took them, surprised by her warm hands. They were calloused, but the back of her hands were strangely soft and smooth. She closed her eyes and focused her concentration on entering Wednesday's thoughts when the petite girl interrupted.

"Anderson?"

"Yeah?"

"Am I not supposed to feel you tearing apart my thoughts?" Wednesday asked.

"I'm . . . not in it yet," Elizabeth admitted.

"That's severely disappointing," Wednesday responded.

The telepath opened her eyes to glare at Wednesday. "You have a painfully thick mental barrier. You're a psychic, aren't you?"

Wednesday stiffened but tried obviously to pass it off as a shrug. "No."

Elizabeth decided to ignore the lie and closed her eyes again.

"What else am I supposed to do besides hold your hands?"

This time Elizabeth's eyes shot open. "What?"
