CHAPTER NINE; another day pretending i'm older than i am

( first incident )

"TRY DRINKING honey?" Enid suggested, watching her friend nervously.

Wednesday crossed her arms. "I don't think we have that in this stupid school."

"It's fine," Elizabeth mouthed back. She sighed. "I'll just tell the teachers that I lost my voice."

Her throat felt raw from screaming.

"No talking from you today," Enid reminded Elizabeth. "Me and Wednesday will let them know."

"Thanks," Elizabeth whispered, sinking into Enid's fluffy bed.

"That's what friends are for," Enid told her, beaming.

She elbowed Wednesday, who took a step back.

"I don't need friends," Wednesday muttered to herself as she walked away. "Sarcasm is enough."

Enid sighed, then put her hand on Elizabeth's forehead. "I don't think you have a fever . . . do you feel ill?"
Elizabeth shook her head, then hastily nodded, remembering that she had used sickness as a cover up story. "Headache."

"Oh, Lizzie, I hope you feel better soon," Enid said, hugging Elizabeth. "Do you want to stay here today?"

"I don't know," Elizabeth responded. She took a deep breath, then realized that if she went to class, she'd have to see Thornhill. "Yeah, I'll probably skip."

"I'll see you later then." Enid waved. "I'll see if you have any work to do."

"Don't remind me," Elizabeth groaned. "I still have, like, a bunch of missing work. Who needs to know about the anatomy of stupid gorgons who don't know how to keep a freaking beanie on their head?"

"Ajax is just a little clueless, but I'm sure he's sweet," Enid argued, crossing her arms. Then she grinned. "Well, perfect time to finish that essay, don't you think?"

ELIZABETH HAD just rolled up her essay when Wednesday stormed in furiously, a bandage taped over her eyebrow, followed by an anxious looking Enid.

"Stupid Bianca . . . how dare she . . . ugh!" Wednesday snarled, grabbing her black umbrella and stuffing it into her backpack.

"Do I want to know what happened?" Elizabeth mouthed to Enid.
