I have never been in a state where I was fully terrified. I was 10 and I got a call out of school, Danny had been rushed to the hospital because his lung had collapsed during his travel baseball tournament. Me being 10 didn't understand that collapsed lungs could heal, so I started to freak out. I ran down the hallway and I entered the office where my mom and Kaley were standing. I looked at Kaley and she was on her phone, she didn't even look like she cared. My mom grabbed my back pack and we headed out of the school.
"Is he dying?" I cried out.
"No but he's in pain, we're gonna go see if Aunt Carol needs anything," My mom said while getting in the car. The whole drive there I still felt terrible...I never even thought I'd be as scared as I was. When we got there we quickly got out of the car and rushed inside. I remember the smell of the hospital. The floors had been freshly mopped, there was a hint of hand sanitizer, and it was cold. We went into the elevator and up to his room where he had been resting. My mom knocked on the door and Carol came and opened the door. She put on that beautiful smile that she always had and pulled my mom in for a hug.
"Gosh that was scary," Carol said while still holding on to my mom. Carol never liked it when her kids got hurt, even if they were sick she would always be so worried. I admired her for that though, she hated to see her kids in pain, you could tell she loved both of them equally and full-heartedly. Carol saw me and she winked and then said,
"Come in, come in, he should be awake in the next hour or so," I was the last to walk in, I was nervous to see what he looked like. I saw him lying there on that uncomfortable bed. Wearing his breathing tube, he still looked like himself. I smiled and then looked down at my feet with relief. I looked over at Kaley and she sat down on the couch that was against the window.
"Where is Julianne?" I ask confused.
"She's with her dad this weekend, remember Sweetie?" Carol says. I nod and then look back at Danny. I always wondered why Danny never wanted to go to his dad's every other weekend. On the other hand he never really talked about him so I guess I wasn't that surprised. It had been about an hour and a half and Danny was getting prepared to be woken up. I was so excited to finally see his eyes. The doctor came in and she said to Carol,
"So he should be waking up anytime now, He can eat I'm sure he's hungry, he'll need to be on breathing tubes for maybe a week after this then he'll start to go back to normal gradually in the next week or so, any questions?" She asks while pulling the clipboard to her chest. Carol shakes her head and then smiles with a relieved look on her face,
"No, no questions...you have just been so great thank you!" she says with her beautiful smile. The Doctor leaves and Carol walks over to him,
"We should go get him some food so that when he wakes up he can eat, and I'll get him a video game or something, would one of you mind staying back just to keep him company just in case?" Carol asks.
"I'll do it, I'll stay back," I say quickly. Carol looks at my mom and then my mom shrugs,
"It's fine with me, just please stay in this room, Kaley you want to stay?" My mom asks.
"Uhm...no thanks, hospitals give me the heebie jeebies," Kaley says with a shiver. I look at her with a dirty look, how could she even say that when our best friend was on that hospital bed. The times like these were the times where I was embarassed to be her siser, she could be so selfish sometimes.
"Okay baby, we'll be back thak you for staying," Carol said while kissing my head. They leave and I go sit by Danny I look at his hand and I go to grab it. His hands where still warm like normal. I looked up at his face and I smile, his hair was messy and pieces of hair fell in his face. I took my other hand and flicked his hair out of his eyes. I always loved it when his hair was messy. I looked down when I suddenly heard a sharp deep breath, which made my head snap back up to his face. He blinked a couple of times and then he finally opened up both of his eyes. I smiled and squeezed his hand a bit tighter. He smiled slightly and said,
"Hey Kare Bear," his voice was groggy and his eyes were droopy but he was still him.
"Hi Danny, how are you feeling?" I ask conceredly. He holds up his other hand and puts a thumb up implying that he was doing great.
"Mom, Carol, and Kay went to go get some food, they'll be back in a bit," I said quietly.
"You stayed? You could have gone," he said slowly. I shrug and fake groan,
"Oh it's torture," I joke and then smile at him.
"I'm glad it was you that stayed, Kare," he said while squeezing my hand again. My heart fluttered, I was so happy he was awake. We spent the next half hour talking abut everything. He talked about baseball, and what happened. I talked about softball and I talked about how my coach let me join the middle school's team even though I was only 10. Danny and I were never awkward around each other, we could talk about everything and nothing at the same time but it would still be so fun. Even if I didn't have Danny romantically, I had him no matter what in any circumstance, he was my best friend. The next two weeks he recovered quickly. It was torture for him not doing baseball, he hated missing it but he had to.
