A48/A1 conjunction
West of Koblenz
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once the Imperials had several battalions of tanks on the other side of the gate, they quickly closed all roads leading out of the city, including the A48 and A61 highways. The Imperials were stopping the traffic, either by blocking all the lanes or by shooting at the civilians. The latter caused some crazy scenes of flying bodies (one was found 100 meters from where they were hit). But the effectiveness was obvious.
The traffic was bogged down and there were massive traffic jams of up to 50 to 70 kilometers in length. It was too late to flee by the time the warning apps and road radios informed civilians of what was happening.
And it came in the form of the 3. homeland defense brigade and the 10. and 20. Armored Brigades. Both were moving through the congested traffic to clear and neutralize any hostile force, endangering the evacuations and preventing ordinary citizens from living freely.
Fortunately, the 2. Company, under the name of "Semmel" moved ahead of the battailons through the "rescue lane," which is basically a fictitious lane created by traffic driving and stopping on the far right and far left, creating this lane between the left lane and the right/middle lane. As a result of the warnings and explanations on the various radio channels, the trucks, buses, and cars quickly moved to the side and turned on their hazard lights. The valley was wide enough for the Leopards and Pumas to pass through. This is surprising because the Leopards are wider than a single lane.
They quickly moved into position, watching out that their barrels wouldn't impede traffic, attempting to leave the combat zone, and waited for the perfect moment. Soon their moment to shine arrived in the form of two heavy tanks, five Assault Tanks, one Tank Destroyer, five medium tanks and ten light tanks.
"Gunner. Target: Tank. Distance: 500m." "Set." "Driver. Forward... Stop." The tank stopped in front of the median. Traffic bypassed the four tanks on the right lane. The Company Commander of Semmel checks the distance and the targets and gives the order to open fire. "FIRE!"
Immediately the first tanks explode. Retaliations follow. But they are either too short, are blocked by the Barandilla, which acts as a median, or simply fly too high and land somewhere in the forest. The 120mm smoothbore cannon developed by Rheinmetall for the Leopard 2 is very accurate. It has a range of up to 4,000 meters. With the current technology to see the targets in the day and in the night (3rd Gen. thermal sights and Night vision), it's availability in combat is far greater than that of the various calibers that the Imperial Forces could throw against them.
While the shelling continued, civilians, not wanting to be caught in the crossfire, drove on both lanes, even on the wrong side of the road, to escape the city. The Imperials with their mechanized infantry and light tanks, supported by half-tracks and medium tanks, had blocked the highway.
Although scouts (who were quickly silenced) reported several trucks full of infantry (mobilized homeland defense reservists) and heavy tanks supported by APCs [Leopards and Pumas], the roadblocks were quickly abandoned, and the tanks were moved into interception.
What was left behind was either an infantry unit the size of a sentry, which was quickly neutralized by angry and enraged civilians, or simply a felled tree lying in the road. Once these obstructions were gone, people quickly started their engines and drove out of town.
Unfortunately, even bad aim has some results and one of the rounds hit the upper front plate of Semmel 4. *DING* It had simply bounced off from the angle and their weak shells simply couldn't penetrate the 3rd generation composite armor of the 65-ton heavy Leopard 2A7V sent to deal with them.
