It's the next day and I'm in the kitchen with my headphones on. "First time was when you were three-" I stop the recording. Three? I have been hurting people since I was three years old? There's something seriously wrong with me. How could I possibly do something like that to someone when I've only just learnt how to walk and talk. I take my headphones off. I'm not ready to hear what he has to say, just yet. I'll come around eventually just not right now. I pick up the birth certificate off the table and scan the information written on it. It has my name, my measurements from when I was first born, my dad's name, and, oh my God, my mum's name. I look at for longer than what would have deemed to be normal but I don't care. This is the only piece of information I have of her. She has a beautiful name, "Janelle". I notice next to her name is her place of birth written, "Bagley, Minnesota". Well now I have two pieces of information on her. I can't believe it. All this time and I knew nothing about my mum, no memories, dad wouldn't tell me anything, nothing. And now I know her name and where she was born. I put down the birth certificate and pick up the money and count it. Ten, twenty, thirty... there's only seventy-five dollars. Well that's a little bit disappointing.
I eat the last meal in the fridge which happens to be some left overs and then I see the half eaten casserole dish. I fumbled around with it and then it drops and breaks into two. Great, that's exactly what I needed. I don't even bother to pick it up I just leave it. I go off to my dad's bedroom and at one point during the night, the phone rings. I quickly get up but it stops ringing before I have a chance to pick it up. Right after that, the lights go out, most likely because of the unpaid electricity bill. I can't stay here much longer, soon this place won't be a safe place to live in. I have to leave.
The following morning I deliberately missed the school bus which I saw was parked outside my new house. I have a huge rucksack on my back with all the things I need and instead of boarding the bus I sprint to city hall. I make it to the bus station and walk up to the woman at the desk and take out a map. I unfold it and place it on the table so that it's facing the woman.
"Hi. I need to get here. What's the closest I can get by bus?"
"It looks like Detroit Lakes. You'll have to change buses a few times. We've only got stations in Minnesota. From Detroit Lakes you can probably take a local." I'm so glad she can help me and actually provide me with some sort of information. The dirty looks and scowls aren't needed but I don't care much at the moment.
"How much is it from Detroit Lakes?" Again with the dirty looks. Does she even realise she's doing it?
"One way, eighty-three dollars. Frederick MD, Chicago and Minneapolis." Oh jesus.
"How much to Chicago?"
"Shouldn't you be in school?" Shouldn't she mind her business?
"You'd think."
"I don't know what that means." Oh my God.
"It means that I'm eighteen in the state of Maryland and I can decide myself where I should be." Hopefully now she'll let me go.
"I'll need to see a driver's license. Or a Learner's Permit." Well I don't have either. Oh wait.
"You can see a birth certificate." She checks the piece of paper thoroughly. Good for her but I want to go or at least know when I can.
"Just to Chicago is forty-nine dollars." Finally.
