As I walk into the school assembly hall my shoulders relax when my eyes lay on the piano. I was able to play the piano ever since I was seven and I've loved it ever since. I walk down the stairs trying to make as little sound as possible. But it's not like I wasn't allowed in here I just didn't want anyone to hear me playing. The only person who has ever heard me play was my dad and he loved it. But I don't and wouldn't ever push someone to listen to me play. I reach the bottom of the steps and sit at the piano. I begin to play and just allow the notes to flow through me. Für Elise was one of my favourite pieces and it always had a special place in my heart because it was my mum's favourite. And ever since I found out I made it my soul mission to learn it perfectly. And I have. My attention is brought to the sound of a door opening and my best friend, (BSF/N) commenting on me playing.
"You didn't tell me you play piano," she seemed really fascinated and I continued to play as she walked down the stairs and sat down next to me on the stool. I stop playing and hear what she came to look for me for. I hope it was worth the weeks wait since I hadn't seen her in ages.
"Hey! You're here. Why weren't you in Home Ec all week?" Me and (BSF/N) were super close but I couldn't read her mind and she was very black and white. Some days she wouldn't talk to me and some days she acted like I was her only friend in the world. Which I was not. She had plenty of other friends who I didn't hate but I would never choose to hang out with unless (BSF/N) was there.
"Yearbook. We missed our deadlines with Jostens." Oh? I actually don't know what I was expecting her to say.
"How does it look?"
"You're not going to be in it, by the way. Mr Esser says he reminded you three times to get your picture taken," she tells me and I just shrug. And then she continues,
"Hey so my dad's doing inventory all night and Jackie and Kim are sleeping over. Come too." I look down at the piano keys and think for a moment, this isn't the best idea considering my past.
"My dad won't let me," I tell her. I was sort of trying to make an excuse but it was true in fact my dad would never let me. Just in case of a 'mistake' happening again.
"So sneak out. After he goes to bed." I contemplate some more. I could sneak out. My dad sleeps heavily and he wouldn't hear me.
"How would I even get there." At this point I was pretty much trying to find any excuse that was reasonable enough so that I couldn't go that was partially the truth. But part of me still really wanted to go.
"You're in Southend right?" I nod. It's not my biggest flex living there but it's what we could afford and on such short notice after moving to this town.
"You know where the power lines go up the hill? That's Chesapeake Road at the top. I'm right there." She takes a small pause and notices that I'm not fully convinced.
"You said you wanted to make more friends here," she says with a sincere look. I shake my head.
"Thanks, though."
