Maloi's POV
Ever since I could hold a crayon, competition has been my lifeblood. From building the tallest block tower in kindergarten to acing the most calculus equations in senior year, I thrived on the thrill of coming out on top. There was only one thorn in my persistently victorious path: Lindtsey Stacey Aubrey Sevilleja.
Stacey was everything I wasn't. Where I was meticulous and borderline neurotic about grades, she possessed an effortless brilliance. While I spent nights hunched over textbooks, she'd breeze through exams after a seemingly casual glance at the material. It was infuriating, yet undeniably impressive.
Our rivalry was legendary. We were academic gladiators, forever locked in an unspoken duel. Every accolade, every perfect score, felt like a personal victory over her. The teachers, bless their oblivious souls, would pit us against each other in class presentations with a flickering amusement dancing in their eyes.
Sunlight streams through the tall windows, illuminating rows of bookshelves. I sit at a table buried in textbooks, surrounded by scattered papers. Across from me, Stacey sat confidently, flipping through a magazine with a bored expression. Textbooks are stacked neatly beside her.
I slammed a textbook shut. "Done! Aced that history mock exam. Feeling pretty good about myself."
"Uh-huh. Did wonders for your ego, I'm sure." she said without looking up.
"Easy for you to say, Miss "Barely Cracks the Textbook Open."" I scoffed.
She raised an eyebrow at me, looking straight to my eyes. "Look who's talking, Ms. "Highlight Every Paragraph.""
"At least I'm prepared! Unlike some people who rely on... magic." I whispered out of annoyance.
She flips the magazine shut with a mischievous glint in her eye. "Magic? Do tell. Maybe you can use some studying spells for the upcoming math test."
"Funny you should mention that. I finished the practice test packet this morning. Scored a perfect 100. You?" I smug.
Stacey leaned back in her chair "Oh, you know, just casually glanced through it on the bus ride here. Did alright, I guess."
