Lucas's PoV
Leah had been increasingly uncomfortable over the past few days. Last week, we rushed to the hospital, thinking she was in labour, but it turned out to be Braxton Hicks contractions. Since then, she's been up all night, frequently going to the bathroom, and if she's awake, so am I. Our OBGYN reassured us that the baby would arrive within a week or two, and Leah is due within the next two weeks. To stay close, I decided to play only home games and skip the two upcoming away games.Tonight, Leah and I were in bed with the TV on in the background. Leah was struggling through a sudoku puzzle, and I was engrossed in Beth's book. It was around 1 a.m., and I could tell Leah was getting tired; she kept losing focus and messing up the numbers.
"Babe, why don't you try and get some sleep?" I suggested.
"I'll be awake within an hour," she replied, sounding frustrated.
"How about we ask each other some questions?" I proposed.
"Questions?" she asked, intrigued.
"Yeah, we can both ask ten questions each. Maybe it'll help you relax enough to fall asleep," I said with a smile.
"Okay, sure. You go first," she agreed.
I turned to face her. "What made you notice me?"
"Erm, I think it was how nice you are, the way you talked about your family, and how you made me feel welcome and listened to me when I talked about mine," she said, blushing.
"Your turn," I prompted.
"What do you see in me that I don't see in myself?" she asked.
"That you are the most kind, genuine human being I've ever met. You're so humble about everything. Sometimes you doubt yourself, but I believe you're the best CB in women's football," I said, smiling.
"Aww, you're so sweet," she responded, touched.
"What's something about me that still surprises you?" I asked.
"How you constantly surprise me in different ways, even after all these years," she said.
"What has been my biggest impact on your life?" she asked next.
"Loving me every day, marrying me, and carrying our beautiful baby boy," I answered sincerely.
We continued asking each other questions for another hour. The conversation flowed naturally, and Leah gradually became more relaxed. Eventually, we both grew tired and finally drifted off to sleep.
*time skip*
Leah's PoVA few hours later, I was pulled from sleep by a sudden, sharp cramp deep in my abdomen, far more intense than anything I'd felt before. My eyes flew open, and for a moment, I lay there in the darkness, trying to make sense of the sensations coursing through my body. Then, without warning, a warm, unmistakable rush of fluid soaked through the sheets beneath me. Panic and excitement surged in equal measure as I realized what had just happened. My water had broken.I struggled to steady my breath, feeling my pulse quicken as another wave of discomfort rolled through me, stronger this time, more insistent. This was no false alarm. This was it—the moment we'd been anticipating for months, the moment that felt so far away and yet now seemed to crash down on me all at once. The baby was coming.I turned my head towards Luke, who was still sleeping soundly beside me, completely unaware of the storm that was about to hit. My heart pounded, a mix of fear and excitement swirling in my chest. I reached out with a trembling hand, placing it gently on his shoulder. "Luke," I whispered, but my voice came out shaky, the words barely forming as the reality of the situation set in. "Luke, wake up!"He groaned softly, shifting in his sleep, but it wasn't enough. Another contraction gripped me, more forceful this time, making me gasp. "Luke!" I said again, louder now, my voice edged with urgency and a tinge of desperation. His eyes snapped open, and for a moment, he just blinked at me, still half lost in sleep. But as his gaze focused and he saw the look on my face—saw the fear, the excitement, the pain—everything about him changed in an instant. He sat up quickly, all traces of sleep gone as concern etched across his features."What is it? What's wrong?" he asked, his voice tight with worry."My water just broke," I managed to say, breathless as I felt another wave of pain build. "It's happening, Luke. The baby... he's coming."For a second, time seemed to stop. The room, still dimly lit by the early morning light, felt charged with a tension that was almost palpable. I could see the understanding dawn in Luke's eyes, followed by a flash of fear, and then, as if a switch had been flipped, he was in motion."Okay, okay," he said, his voice firm as he pushed himself out of bed, already reaching for his phone. "We need to get to the hospital. Let's get you up. Are you okay? Can you walk?"I nodded, even though the truth was, I wasn't sure. Everything felt surreal, like I was moving through a dream I couldn't quite wake up from. My mind was racing—thoughts of the hospital, the birth, our baby boy finally arriving—but through it all, Luke's calm, steady presence was the one thing anchoring me.He was already helping me out of bed, his hands gentle but sure as he supported me. I gripped his arm, leaning into him as I stood, the contractions making it difficult to stay upright. "We've got this," he whispered, more to reassure me than anything else, though I could hear the tremor in his voice, betraying his own nerves. The room around us felt like it was spinning, the air heavy with the anticipation of what was to come. Every step we took felt like it carried the weight of the world, leading us closer to the moment we'd been waiting for, the moment that was about to change our lives forever.
