ALICE'S POV:
11 days.
That's how long it's been since I've heard from Charles.
The last time we spoke or saw each other was the night of the after party.
I had fallen asleep and woke up to the sound of silence. I opened my eyes to see nothing but an empty hotel room. All signs of Charles were gone. His clothes, suitcase, everything.
My first action was to text him and check to see if everything was okay.
Alice:
Hey, just woke up and you're not here. Everything okay?
Read 10:37No reply. I thought maybe he just opened the message by an accident or forgot to reply but no. Days went by without a reply.
My sister postponed her wedding by a week because her fiancé was sick. Which meant I had more time to ask Charles to go with me. If I even got to see him.
But I didn't.
I spent my free time sight-seeing in Miami. Charles leaving meant I had to lengthen my stay at the hotel, which cost a lot more money than I would've thought.
It was now Thursday, two days before the wedding and I was flying back home.
I know I shouldn't have but I decided to text Charles to let him know where I was, just incase he cared, which didn't seem likely.
Alice:
Hey, I am flying back home for my sister's wedding, please text me I'm really worried about you.
Read 15:28Great. He was opening and reading my messages straight away but wasn't replying. What a dickhead.
I replayed that Sunday night over and over in my head for the past 11 days and I don't know what happened that could have scared him away. Maybe I said something wrong or mean. If I did he really should've just told me by now.
I tried to clear my head during the flight home but I couldn't quite understand what went wrong.
Once the plane had landed I waited until it was my turn to get off and made my way through the airport where I was met with my joy ridden sister Lilly and her soon to be husband, Ben. He was holding a sign with my name on it while she waved frantically at me.
I ran straight into her arms, trying to soak up all the hugs we have missed while I was away for almost three weeks. The first week seemed to fly but the last two dragged and felt like forever.
"Where's lover boy?'' my sister asked as she let go of me, she glanced around as she spoke. She looked behind me to see if Charles was following.
"oh, he couldn't make it, work stuff'' I lied, avoiding eye contact with my sister as I knew she would be able to see through my lies if I looked at her.
"I knew I had a reason for him to be my least favorite formula one driver'' Ben finally spoke up as he pulled me into a side hug and took my suitcase from me.
" You and me both, Ben" I jokingly agreed as my sister studied my facial expressions.
We slowly made our way out of the airport. Ben is a fast walker and he started to get annoyed by how slow we were walking.
I caught Lilly up on everything that had been going on. She was obviously eager to find out about Charles and I's relationship but I didn't want to tell her too much. We finally got to the car and Ben drove us home. It felt great to be home with my sister, I really missed her and her advice would've been extremely appreciated this past few weeks.
My sister was always very independent. She moved out when she was 19 but moved back a couple of months ago because she felt a bit homesick, but after this weekend she would be moving out and into her new husband Ben's apartment. Lilly would rarely share her feelings with me, always keeping herself closed off but Ben brought out a different side to her, a soft side that she rarely showed to her own family. That's how I knew Ben was the right one for her.
I was really happy for Lilly but my thoughts were still occupied by Charles. I consistently checked my phone to see if any new messages came through but I was always left without an answer.
I spent the thirty minute car journey trying to distract myself by listening to Lilly's plans for this upcoming weekend celebration.
I was her maid of honour which meant I had a very important role for this wedding. She already had all of the bridesmaids dresses ordered and her wedding dress was at home.
I honestly didn't know how she managed to plan a wedding in the space of two weeks. If that was me, I would have postponed this wedding about a hundred times.
When we finally arrived home, I grabbed my suitcase from the boot and made my way to the front door. Just as I placed my hand on the handle the door was opened for me by my Dad.
He welcomed me with open arms as he squeezed me tightly.
" It's so good to see you" My father spoke as he pulled away from the hug. I noticed a tear falling from his eye. My Dad was the exact opposite of Lilly. He wasn't scared to show his emotions and was probably the most emotional person I've ever known.
"I'm so happy to be back" I spoke as my dad took my suitcase and carried it through the hall and into the kitchen.
I surveyed the hall as I strolled through it. The pictures on the walls had definitely been changed but I couldn't tell which ones. I could always ask my mom later.
"Do you want a cup of tea?" My Dad kindly asked as he pulled out a mug from the cupboard.
"Yes please" I spoke as I sat down at the kitchen table. I glanced around, taking in my forgotten surroundings.
I then looked outside and I really wished I hadn't because the person standing there was the last person I wanted to see this weekend.
My ex boyfriend, Jack Thompson.
