CHAPTER FIFTEEN

chapter fifteen: losing air

THE FAYE GIRL COULD FEEL her heart dropping to her stomach at the monkey-mutt that roared at her. Her flinch even startled Peeta, who held a grip on her arm and slowly backed the two closer to Katniss and Finnick. Meeting back to back, the four watched as the creatures surrounded them, awful noises irrupting as they circled their prey.

Seraphina slowly pulled out her machete, holding it up in defences as she prepared for some sort of attack. She cursed the universe, just after calming down from a sprint away from the poisonous fog and now they had landed as the prey to the mutts.

"Get to the beach," Katniss announced, frantically turning with her bow to stop any pouncing.

Just as one began to attack, so did the rest. In a flash, a mutt had ran at the brunette girl, its teeth bared before she managed to impale it without a scratch. She pulled out her machete, ducking in time to dodge another attack before standing back to her feet. She swing the knive around, almost warning nearby mutts.

A grunt behind her caught her attention, turning around to see one on top of Peeta, who struggled. She kicked the creature in the back, shoving it off the boy who then sent the final blow. Offering a hand to help him up, Seraphina didn't catch sight of the animal that approached her from behind.

It pushed her to the ground from the back, its nails impaling her calf as she landed on her knees with a cry. It had no time to do any further damage when a trident impaled its insides. Finnick wasted no time in pulling the girl to her feet, pushing her behind him protectively as he pushed back another.

Seraphina silently thanked him before turning around, now back to back with the blonde career as they began to protect one another. She managed to kill a few mutts, warning off the rest and then throwing a smaller knife at one about to get Katniss.

Just as she took a moment to breathe, another monkey-mutt growled loudly and ran at the duo, hitting them in the side and knocking them into the small pond of water they had just healed their boils in. Seraphina gasped for air as she sat up, pushing herself in front of Finnick as the mutt went in for the kill.

She knocked it back, but the larger one recovered well enough to pounce on her. She felt the breathe leave her lungs as the monster held her under the water, about to sink its teeth into her neck. The girl quickly allowed her fear to motivate her, using her weapon to drive it into the neck of the animal, killing it instantly.

She gasped for air before standing up, almost hunched over as she felt the blood on her face. The beach was just about in the clearing, and all four seemed to glance at eachother in a nod to make a run for it. Finnick shoved Seraphina ahead, allowing her the safest position to run on.

Seraphina, however, was not prepared to leave the rest behind, slowing down to make sure everyone was following. Just as she turned around for a third time, a mutt pushed between her and Peeta, knocking her into a tree and causing her to let out a grunt as her back took the hit.

She struggled to stand for a moment, but as her fight or flight quickly took over once more, she felt the pain numbing and focused on saving the others. She rushed to Katniss' aid, holding her weapon like a baseball bat and swinging, cutting the head of the monkey-mutt straight off.

The Everdeen girl nodded in thanks, allowing the brunette to help her up before she noticed a body next to Peeta. "Who is that?"
