"Turn around," he said. Not expecting that she would. After a while, she turned and looked straight into his eyes; she had an expression he couldn't decipher.
That evening when he held her hand and walked together, he had recognised the hesitation in her. Although she was present with him her eyes looked astray. He noticed she didn't want to talk, and he had obliged, fearing that if he said something... anything, he would lose time with her.
The next day when he saw her at the wedding, he had made up his mind. He couldn't wait any longer. She had to know what he felt for her. She radiated like the sun. Everything around her looked dull and colourless. The pearls around her neck, the flowers in the waves of her hair, and the bronze glow of her skin had pulled him to her. He had seen her shrinking, the discomfort she was in when the gazes had turned to her so he held her close and comforted her.
He had noticed her hardened face when she had seen him with the princess. The surprise when he had given her the ring. The only thing that bothered him was the way she guarded the feelings she had when she was with him. He wanted to know what stopped her. What closed her off?
He climbed to her room the same way he had climbed days before. He knew she would be in there because a dim lamp light flickered from her window.
What he didn't expect was an attack. But the gash on his arm didn't bother him, her appearance that night had distracted him from the pain. She looked beautiful in every way.
" Turn around," he said because he wanted to look into her eyes to tell her what he had in his mind. He held her by her nape, propped up her chin and leaned into her. He wanted to tell her everything, what she meant to him, how she turned his world around. But she squeezed shut her eyes which stopped him from saying it.
" Do you still not trust me?" He asked.
She looked back at him. Her breath was uneven. " I don't trust myself." She said.
"Why don't you tell me what you feel?" He asked as he wrapped his arm around her waist.
She gulped and averted her eyes.
"What is stopping you?" He asked.
" Tell me, I will listen." She didn't say anything and still looked at the floor.
" Don't make it difficult for me, you have no idea how it pains me." He urged. " Do you not feel anything for me?"" I do."
He placed his lips on her neck. " Do you not like me?"" I... I do," She said. He trailed along her neck to her ear.
" Then let go of your inhibitions and tell me what you truly feel." He whispered in her ear. Savouring the moment with her. He felt her body getting limp in his arms.
He moved away from her.
"But if you don't feel anything at all... I stop right here." He pulled the sheet from the bed and covered her with it.
" I won't bother you ever again. One word from you will stop me. Never to cross you ever again." It pained him dearly to say it but he had to make it clear to her. In his mind, he knew that his persuasion would take him only this far. And whatever she decided, he had to live with it. He wished she understood what she meant to him. He looked at her with hope.
