With everyone helping, it doesn't take long for us to rebuild the Fairy Fort. BigB especially is eager to help in an effort to make up for everything.
Lizzie insists that Scott and I stay in the Fairy Fort, at least for a little while. At first, Scott argues with her saying that the two of them could combine their powers again to protect our river canyon, but Lizzie is adamant. Eventually Scott relents and agrees to stay temporarily.
Since we won't be staying in the Fairy Fort long-term, Scott and I share a house. We both appreciate the comfort of being close together.
The first night we stay in our new house in the Fairy Fort, I wake up in the middle of the night to a quiet knock. I open my bedroom door to find Scott, his eyes bright with tears. "Can I join you?" he asks quietly. I give him a gentle smile and nod, stepping aside to let him in.
I grab his hand and lead him over to the bed. Once we're both settled, I hold him close and his breathing starts to slow. I'm just starting to drift off when Scott whispers sleepily, "I love you."
I open my eyes, hardly believing my ears. I glance down at Scott, but he's fallen asleep. It takes a moment for me to find my voice. "I love you too."
Even though he can't hear me, something about saying it out loud makes it seem more real. Now that I've said it once, it doesn't seem so scary to say it again.
I place a soft kiss on his forehead before drifting off to sleep.
The next morning, Scott can barely look at me without his cheeks turning pink. I've never seen Scott so awkward and I have to admit it's kind of cute.
Around midday, Scott approaches me. "Can we talk?" he asks hesitantly. I nod, and he leads me to the garden where I talked to Lizzie only a week and a half ago.
Scott takes a breath before speaking. "I wanted to explain about last night-" he starts, but I cut him off. "I love you too, Scott."
He looks at me as if he's waiting for me to take it back. "You really mean it?" he asks quietly. "Of course I do," I answer with a soft smile.
Scott smiles shyly back before looking down at his hands. I look down to see a flower blossoming in his palm. It's a rose exactly like the one he gave me when we first came to the Fairy Fort, except this one is red.
My breath catches when Scott tucks the rose behind my ear. As he starts to pull his hand away, he hesitates before gently cupping my cheek in his hand. We just stand there for a moment, simply enjoying each other's presence. Then Scott slowly leans in.
When Scott's lips meet mine, it's like the rest of the world fades into the background. Suddenly all that matters is me and him and this happy moment, an impossibly happy moment.
"Are you two kissing?"
Scott and I both turn to see Grian peeking around the corner of the castle. Pearl appears behind him and places a hand on his shoulder. "Grian, give the lovebirds some space," she scolds, before grinning at me and Scott.
I glance over at Scott at the same time he looks over at me. When our eyes meet, we both start laughing. And in that moment, I realize how lucky I am to have found this family.
Two months have passed since we saved Scott, Cleo, and BigB. Scott and I are sitting side by side, leaning against the trees surrounding the Fairy Fort with our hands entwined. Scott's head is resting on my shoulder and my head is resting on his.
Just a few meters in front of us, Bdubs, Scar, Grian, and BigB are all playing a game together. The day after we saved everyone, it was decided that BigB would stay in the Fairy Fort. The only person who was against the idea was Cleo, who swore she would never forgive BigB. She vehemently stuck to that oath until BigB saved Scar and Bdubs from a warden.
Watching the four play their game from the sidelines are Etho and Cleo. They've been spending a lot of time together, enjoying each other's company and taking care of Scar and Bdubs. Cleo has been incredibly grateful for the help.
Pearl and Gem are conversing in the shade of one of the larger trees. The two of them became fast friends, with Pearl being extremely glad to have a girl closer to her age in the Fairy Fort. They'll spend hours talking about whatever comes to mind. I'm pretty sure I overheard Pearl say something about a murder camel once. Honestly, I'm scared to ask about it.
Martyn and Ren have also been sending a lot of time together. Martyn had a hard time letting go of the whole royal guard thing, so he appointed himself as both Lizzie's and Ren's bodyguard. Within a few days, Ren and Martyn became practically inseparable.
Lizzie and Joel are standing just inside the castle doorway, talking and laughing. They've been happier than I thought two people could be ever since Joel proposed to Lizzie a few days ago.
As for me and Scott, we moved back to our little river canyon just recently, although we occasionally stay the night in our house at the Fairy Fort. The river canyon is now surrounded by a ring of red poppies, courtesy of Scott's and Lizzie's combined powers. At first, I was worried that using so much power twice could have lasting effects, but both Scott and Lizzie were perfectly fine after a few hours.
As I look around the Fairy Fort, I can't help but smile, the sunshine, the easy laughter, and the feeling of Scott's head on my shoulder creating a perfect moment. Who would've thought that so much happiness could exist, surrounded by poppies and roses?
