After pushing Caleb, I bolted away at full speed. Halfway through, I looked back to find he hadn't chased after me, and I was nearly out of breath, so I ran back to the campus convenience store to buy a soda to quench my thirst. As I drank, I cursed under my breath about how sneaky and petty Caleb could be.Back in the dorm, I kicked off my shoes and flopped onto my bed, pretending to be dead.Tess, from below, asked, "What happened to you?"Desperate to vent, I got up from the bed and exclaimed, "I need some advice!"After melodramatically explaining everything, one roommate kept playing online games without a word, another accused me of showing off to make them jealous, and the last one said I was overreacting and that she'd be thrilled to be in my shoes.I hit my head against the closet in frustration. "What kind of world is this?"Tess tried to comfort me, "He's just showing he cares. Don't fight with him.""But it was blatant slander!" I protested."Slander? That he has feelings for you? How do you know it's slander? I'd trust your boyfriend's judgment over your discernment," Tess replied.I banged my head against the desk.Caleb had charmed everyone around me, the very picture of a modern-day seductress. I had expected Caleb to call or text to apologize for his harsh words in a fit of jealousy. But after waiting two days without a peep from him, I was disappointed.Tess suggested, "Everyone says fights between couples end quickly; why don't you make up? I saw him at the cafeteria with another girl. Aren't you afraid he might leave you for someone else?"She had a point. The argument wasn't worth dragging out. But there was no way I was going to be the first to make amends."What should I do?" I pondered. "Ah! How about you trick him into meeting me, and I'll act as if I was fooled into coming?"Tess rolled her eyes. "You're so childish."That afternoon, I waited in a bubble tea shop. When Caleb walked in, I feigned surprise, "Oh, it's you?"Caleb glanced at me and said, "Stop pretending. What do you want?"I almost choked on my drink.Clearing my throat, I said, "About this matter, I feel I did nothing wrong, and neither did you, really."He scoffed.I continued, "James and I are truly just classmates, and he definitely doesn't have feelings for me."Caleb interrupted with a dismissive wave, "I don't want to discuss this matter with someone of your intellect anymore."I tried to ignore his comment about my intellect.Looking at him, I confessed, "Caleb, you know, I really do like you, a lot. And you're the only one I like."Sometimes, you end up saying incredibly cheesy things, but if they resonate with the listener, that's all that matters.Caleb smiled. "Yeah, I know."Seeing a thaw in his demeanor, I suggested, "Let's stop fighting and make up."He asked, "If that curly-haired guy comes looking for you again, will you go?"Curl-haired guy?Caleb saw my hesitation and smiled, adding, "If you still think you're right and want to keep hanging out with that curly-haired guy, then let's end this conversation here."Seeing him about to leave, I grabbed his sleeve, pleading, "Don't always hold onto the matter with James. It was all a misunderstanding.""That wasn't a misunderstanding; it was about boundaries. Come find me when you realize that," Caleb said, and walked away.Tess, who had been buying chicken skewers next door, popped in."How did it go? Did you make up?" she asked.I handed her Caleb's untouched bubble tea. "He didn't drink it. You have it.""Why don't you just apologize and make up with him? Isn't it obvious who's more important, a friend or a boyfriend?" Tess suggested.I sighed and shook my head. Our disagreement over James led to our first cold war in our relationship
