Tears blurred my vision as I gazed at Caleb. One look and I knew he had rushed over; his hair was tousled by the wind.Caleb frowned with concern. "Is it still stuck?"I nodded. He addressed the three women behind us, "This won't do. I need to take her to the hospital. You go ahead, and leave the door unlocked for us tonight."Then he grabbed me and hailed a taxi.Leaning against his shoulder, barely able to speak, I murmured, "How did you get here? Did they call you?""Yeah," he replied, "just as I got back to my dorm, your roommate, Tierra, called to say you'd swallowed a bone and were turning blue."I leaned on him in silence, as speaking hurt too much.He asked, "Was the bone you swallowed big?"I shook my head.He brushed my bangs aside, "How can you still be so careless with eating at your age?"At his words, tears started to fall. I blurted out, "If you hadn't been ignoring me, I wouldn't have been so down. If I hadn't been so down, I wouldn't have gone for chicken soup. If I hadn't had the soup, I wouldn't have choked. And now you blame me..."By the time I finished, I was nearly out of breath, clutching my throat and gasping between tears.Caleb actually laughed. "Not bad, you can still talk so much; it can't be that bad."Ignoring him, my tears fell even harder. In the past, I wasn't this fragile. I could handle a scraped knee with a stoic tear-off-the-bandaid approach. But now, it felt like I was carrying the weight of the world, tears falling like they were free.Caleb held me close, gently patting my back. "Alright, alright, it's my fault. Don't cry, sweetheart, please don't cry."The taxi driver couldn't contain himself and chuckled."Sir, this isn't a comedy show. I'm actually in distress here."When we arrived, the generous driver turned out to be a real Good Samaritan and didn't charge us.At the hospital, I suddenly remembered, "The medical records..."Caleb patted his coat pocket, "Don't worry, I've got everything with me."I sat quietly on a chair while Caleb went to register. After registration, we went up to the second floor for an X-ray.The radiologist warned, "There's a chance we might not see the obstruction. If we can't see anything, you'll need to undergo an endoscopy."My heart tightened at the mention of an endoscopy, the thought of something being inserted down my throat...The doctor handed me a cup of something to drink before the procedure. "Drink this, then we'll start the X-ray." He cautioned, "Many young women find this quite uncomfortable."The cup contained a white, chalky suspension."Alright, drink up," the doctor instructed.I swallowed hard, the substance as revolting as stuffing gauze into plaster and swallowing it. I nearly vomited but managed to keep it down. After drinking, the doctor scrutinized the X-ray screen for a long time and then announced, "I can't see anything. How do you feel?"Feeling relieved, I excitedly said, "Much better!"Caleb looked at me seriously, "Are you just saying that because you're scared of the endoscopy?""No, really, I feel better. Look, I can talk without any blockage!"The doctor chuckled, "Probably the barium has helped the bone pass. You're all good now."Caleb smiled warmly. "Doctor, just to be safe, let's do the endoscopy."I clung to his arm, "No, please, I was wrong."Ultimately, the doctor sent us away, convinced I was fine.Stepping out of the hospital, I sighed in relief, holding onto Caleb's arm, "Being healthy really is what's best."Caleb checked his phone; it was past midnight."This late, the dorm might be locked," he remarked.I let go of his arm and stood firm, "I am not going to a hotel with you!"He laughed coldly, "Why would I go to a hotel with someone who can't eat chicken properly?"His words stung! In the end, we didn't go to a hotel or end up on the streets. After much pleading, I managed to get us into the dorm under the stern gaze of the night monitor. As for Caleb, the dorm guard cheerfully let him in, saying, "Ah, back from taking care of your girlfriend, eh?"Isn't it curious how people
