In the middle of the night, feeling feverish and achy all over, like I'd inhaled fire, I knew something was terribly wrong. My body felt weak; I lay in bed groaning a few times, but my roommates were sound asleep, no one responded.I had no choice but to call Tess, who was next to me."Tess... Tess..."Startled, Tess sat up suddenly.I continued to moan, "Tess... Tess..."She relaxed a bit when she realized it was me, but then grew concerned when she heard my weak voice. "Sister, you can't just do this in the middle of the night; you could scare someone to death."I said feebly, "I think I'm about to die."Alarmed, Tess crawled over to check on me and exclaimed, "Oh my goodness!"She turned on the light, waking everyone else. When someone asked what was wrong, Tess said, "Audrey has a fever; her head is burning up."I heard Tess calling Caleb on the phone, and thinking that he would be coming, I figured I should go downstairs to meet him.As I tried to get up, everyone helped me into a jacket.I was staggering toward the door when Tess grabbed me, asking, "Where do you think you're going?"I said, "Isn't Caleb coming? I'm going downstairs."Tess pulled me back, "You're delirious. He'll come up here; just wait."I said, "I'm fine, really. I just want to wait for him downstairs."Tess insisted, "Just sit here and wait."Leaning against the bed railing, I thought to myself that I might have overdone it this time and would probably end up in the hospital.A roommate gave me a cup of water. I tried to make a joke by asking, "Isn't there any ice? This is too hot."Tess earnestly suggested, "We don't have ice here, but there's some at the store. When Caleb gets here, you can ask him to buy you some, and you can also ask for ice cream."I stayed silent, thinking they must believe I was out of my mind if they thought I was going to get scolded by Caleb for that.Soon, the door opened, and squinting through my half-closed eyes, I saw Caleb's familiar face.Sitting there, I remained silent and didn't move as Caleb approached and knelt by the bed, placing his hand on my forehead.Although my face showed nothing, inside, I was thrilled. He was finally touching me after so many days of cold war. When Caleb tried to move his hand away, I acted like I was out of my mind from the fever and stubbornly kept his hand pressed against my forehead. He glanced at me and then asked Tess when the fever started."Just found out, but she's probably been burning up for a while," Tess replied.Trying to remove his hand again, I held it down more firmly. He told me, "Behave, we need to go to the hospital now."I pouted and let him go.Standing up, he asked Tess if she should come with us. Caleb said it wasn't necessary; he could manage alone. He then crouched down again and asked if I could walk.I tried to stand but genuinely felt weak.Caleb turned his back to me and said, "Come on, I'll carry you."I clumsily climbed onto his back, sliding down a bit before managing to hoist myself up properly. He told me to wrap my hands around his neck, and I did as he instructed. He then stood up, carrying me outside.I noticed the dormitory supervisor standing at our door."Ma'am, you don't have to glare; I didn't mean to wake you up with my midnight fever," I thought to myself as I rested my cheek against Caleb's back, listening to his breathing.I muttered, "Piggybacking the bride."He responded, "Even delirious, you talk nonsense."I kept quiet, letting him think the fever had muddled my mind.My cheek pressed against his back, I slowly rubbed it, missing him terribly over these past few days. Finally, I was in contact with him again.Caleb hailed a taxi and gently set me down inside. When I tried to climb in by myself, he swiftly picked me up and placed me in the car.He told the driver, "Please hurry."I laughed and said, "Just called you Piggyback, and now you're calling for Master."The laugh sent a sharp pain through my sinuses, feeling as if I was possessed by both the Bull Demon King and his son, capable of shooting flames from my nostrils.Caleb glanced at me but didn't engage with my delirious chatter. The driver asked, "Your girlfriend's sick?"Caleb replied, "Yes, she's got a high fever."The driver said, "Okay, I'll try to speed up."Originally, Caleb had me lean against his shoulder, but I slowly shifted and ended up lying across his lap, taking advantage of the moment to fully rest in his embrace. He didn't stop me, just let me be, and even held me with one arm to prevent me from slipping. After all, I was feverishly delirious. In the darkness, my hot hand found his, and I began to stroke it gently. He still didn't react; hey, who blames a feverish person?I grew bolder, attempting to rub my hot, flushed cheek against his cool, composed face. Before I could get far, Caleb gently pushed me away, looking down at me.My goodness, he must have the eyes of a hawk! I quickly shut my eyes, feigning that I was overwhelmed by the heat.Caleb allowed me to lean back against him, and I didn't dare make another move, not having the energy to do so anyway. I just quietly stayed in his arms.As the taxi sped towards the hospital, I felt a mix of regret and relief. Regret for causing such a fuss and relief that Caleb was finally here with me.
