"Attention. Attention, tributes. There has been a slight rule change. The previous revision, allowing for two victories from the same district, has been revoked. Only one victor may be crowned. Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor." Claudius Templesmith announces.
Cato looks at me. "I guess they had their fun."
"Do you think Katniss and Peeta are still teamed up?"
"Not sure."
We sit there in silence for a while. I mean what is there for us to talk about. Which one of us is going to win. All the thoughts of us going home together vanish, and all my thoughts from the beginning of the game comes back. Cato is the one that needs to go home out of the both of us.
I can't imagine he'll agree with that, but I know that regardless of what happens, it will happen. This rule change and then the change again seems stupid, but really it makes sense. They wanted the viewers to have someone to root for, or other, a couple to root for. All they want it a good show, they want more people to watch. Based on what Eno said, I can only imagine that outside of the games there are bids about which couple they think is going to win. Which of the two is cuter, or which of the two should go home. Which leads to sponsors betting too. It's all so stupid. The more I think about it the more I hate the games. I think Cato is starting to agree now. But for now we refuse to talk about it. Because I don't know how I can. Because I can't live without him. So I might as well make sure he can still live without me.
Night time falls and it suddenly feels more real. Cato holds me in his arms, tightly. His head was in my neck and was breathing heavily. I reached my hand over and played with his hair. He drifts off to sleep but I don't allow myself. Something feels off. The whole arena somehow feels, off. I can't wrap my finger around it but the atmosphere has completely changed. It's like all life has suddenly vanished, and all that there is left is the lingering feeling of violence. I didn't like it. I turn myself over and look at Cato. His features twinkling in the starlight. There's one thing this arena couldn't change, his beautiful smile. He's smiling in his sleep and I trace his dimples. Then I hear something.
My head snaps back and I wonder around with my eyes. I shrug it off and go back to looking at him, but when I hear it again I sit up. I look around alertly and work my way to my feet. With a dagger in hand I slowly creep to where the sound was coming from. It's dark, too dark. I can hardly see straight. But what I do see is beaty green eyes staring right at me. I see it through the tree and approach it. It doesn't get closer to me though, so the more I advance the more cautious I am. I quickly eye my peripherals and then slice underneath the eyes. The beast falls down. That was too easy. I pull the creature out into the open and examine it. It's a black panther like creature, only its attributes throw me off. Emerald green eyes, blonde fur, there was no doubting it, this was Glimmer.
When I noticed it I flinch back, landing on my back. I hoist myself up and walk over to Cato, when I hear another one. My head jerks over as it comes from the same area. I grab Cato's sword and hold it up to the area. I slowly back away from it and tap Cato on his shoulder.
"Cato." I whisper. He yawns and opens his eyes and goes to say something when I cover his mouth. "Slowly get up and take this."
He nods and makes his way out of his sleeping bag, once he does he grabs the sword and holds it at that area. By then he's probably noticed the dead mutt on the ground and pieced it all together.
"The final bloodbath?" He whispers.
"Looks like it." I say, gathering up my weapons. I throw on my jacket and join Cato's side. He lowers his sword and looks at me. He gives me a knowing smile before three more mutts come out of nowhere. We stand back to back as the mutts surround us. We starts to slash at them, making them fall. I take out one that resembles the district 7 girl, while Cato takes out another one. We stumble back together as more and more start to surround us.
