Life got back to normal after the party, or as normal as it could be. Living alone was getting easier and easier. I'd catch up on the sleep I didn't get the night before, and then Cato would come over and we'd waste the day away. I was looking forward to school starting back up again though, I needed a way to distract my mind as much as possible. Summertime has always been when the games happened, but you could feel the air getting cooler. I always liked school, I was good at it and usually no one seemed to even notice me. During training it'd all just be the same, only people would notice me for my skills and envy my abilities. But being actually popular in school was never in the cards for me.
It'll be weird going back to the academy after being in the games. Usually volunteers are 18 and don't have to go back, but that's not the case for me, or for Cato. He failed kindergarten. I am kinda worried how people will perceive me, will they think me a monster? Be proud of me? What about my Trainer, the person responsible for putting me into the games in the first place, how does he feel about all this? I had so many questions that were about to be answered.
Waking up without Cato was a feeling I didn't want to get used to. His family had told him not to sleepover tonight since it was school, but he stayed as late as he could last night. I put my hair into a ponytail and got into the school uniform, a skirt and shirt. I didn't pack my training suit, which was strange, I don't remember the last time I just went to school. I took the training appointments out of my schedule, there wasn't a need for them anymore anyways. I walked out of my house. Usually, I would leave early in order to have some time before the day started to train, but I left at a normal time, it felt out of body.
Arriving at school I noticed something immediately, everyone seemed off around me. They had their guards up. I sure as hell wasn't popular before, but now I was a complete outcast. I kept my head down, not daring to look around. I could hear people whispering when I pasts, and others pointing me out. It was unnerving. Reaching my class couldn't had come sooner, I sat in the back as quick as I could and buried my head into my arms to suppressing the little tears that had settled. I guess using school as a distraction from the games wasn't gonna work the way I wanted.
All class I wondered how people were reacting to Cato. He was popular before all this, hearttrob almost. Every girl in school wanted him and he was the kind of person that everyone knew but not everyone could be friends with. When the bell rung I almost ran out of the class, at this point being alone with my thoughts would be better than being here, surrounded by people that were either jealous, scared, or annoyed of me.
Have you ever walked the halls of your school knowing that everyone has been talking about you? It's not fun. I needed a friend, I needed to go home, I needed the one person that had the power to stop all this commotion, and there he was. He was walking the opposite direction of the halls from me, he didn't spot me at first, but once he noticed how the atmosphere of the halls changed, he saw me. He was walking with his friends, almost parting the halls through the middle. Getting closer and closer to him I notice he's different. It's been a while since we've been here, in a place where people worship the ground he walks on. Was it getting to his head? It makes me start to worry and overthink, is he about to pretend he doesn't know me? Brush past me to save his reputation? I mean he's like a god here, and if people knew he still talked to me it would either bring his reputation down or save me from this hell.
Before I pass him; however, I feel him change his direction, placing his arm around my shoulders and rubbing my arm. He kissed the side of my head, leaving his friends and everyone watching speeceless. Why did I ever doubt him? I look up at him, saying thank you with my eyes. Once we're away from the crowd and people start to disperse away, seemingly bored now, we stop. He faces me, looking around before speaking, we're alone.
