We know of two schools in the Lost Cities: Foxfire and Exillium. Foxfire is the fancy, elaborate school that promises a bright future and Exillium is the school for banished kids.
It would be totally illogical for those to be the only two schools in the Lost Cities (though the Lost Cities are pretty illogical). This is why I assume there are more normal schools scattered around the Lost Cities that people who attend Foxfire just don't think about.
But this isn't the only gap in the school system. Read over the Foxfire curriculum and you'll notice several classes missing, including ones that would have to be in the curriculum. Like genetics, for future matchmakers. Elves start attending Foxfire at 11-12, so that doesn't give them very long to learn the other important parts of the curriculum. Sure, grown-ups could take genetics classes, but it's still kind of weird that the elves learn things like elementalism, alchemy, and metaphysics, but not math.

FanfictionI just thought a bunch about KotLC and came up with some crazy ideas. And theories. And rants. And "Okay, this kind of fits but I hate it so bad." Also me giving AI KotLC questions and watching it be horribly wrong. And some cool fanfics I've found...
