"You're getting a little too good at shooting Blakey."
My dad pats my shoulder as I look over at him with a proud grin spread across my face.

"Better than you?" I ask raising a brow and he scoffs shaking his head laughing.
"You're not there yet."

"One day, and then I'm gonna kick your ass when I become the better shooter and fighter." I challenge and he just laughs along more as he places his arm over my shoulder.

"Your mother is going to kill us for going back late." He says as we walk out the shooting room side by side and I roll my eyes the moment I hear mother.

"What's new." I scoff annoyed.
"Hey come on she's your mother."

"Yeah some mother, dad. She only sees me three times a week. Before she has to go back to the main base."

"Yet I only see you once-"
"And somehow I favour you more. I wonder why."

"You've wasted too much time." Oh and there she is. Love it when she's not ever here rather than when she is.
"And your dad has other duties to attend to doesn't he?"
She isn't talking to me anymore. No she looks at him dead in the eyes and I stare at him confused.

"No he doesn't. He said he's at our base all week." I defend him staring at her confused.
"Avery-"

"Actually I think I do. Next time sweetheart. I'll train you tomorrow." He pressed his lips to my head and I turn to my mother confused and angry that she pulls me away from him.

"What's your problem? I do everything you ask. And I barely get to see dad, and you only spend three days a week with me so to spend them making me hate you-"

"Stop being a child." She shuts me up instantly and I stare at her my mouth closed as I struggle to fight back with my words.
I am a child!
I'm twelve and a child!

"Come on, walk with me. The other subjects are eating their lunch." She says to me and I decide not to fight with her.
No I just walk with her through the cold halls as the guards walk behind us.

"You're getting clever. More than the rest." She states and I don't respond keeping my eyes glued to the hallway.

"Don't let distractions like your dad take that away."
She says and I don't react. I just keep walking.
"Look I know you think he's the lesser of two evils between us but-"

"No buts. You're right, you're always right. I won't get distracted."
I just have to agree so it doesn't cause an argument,
It sounds exhausting when it comes out my mouth.

"Good. You've got a smart head."
What about my heart?
"Go join the subjects. I'll see you later for your premature medical exams."

"You keep doing it."
I snap my head as I turn to Newt who was talking to me but I haven't listened to a word he has said which I instantly feel guilty for.

"Huh?"

"Exactly that. Everything good love?" He asks turning his head to me and I stare at Jorge who just walks ahead not saying a word to us.

"It will be when we see Thomas alive."
"That shanks put us through to much shit to die before us." Newt says and I let out a small laugh agreeing.
He's not the only one who's put them through a lot.

"You've not told Minho about..." I whisper as I look at Minho who walks beside Jorge in silence too as me and Newt are far back.
I decided to walk at his pace in case he got tired because his leg would be sore.
And I honestly think he was slowing down for me because I thought my body would collapse soon.
