Chapter 0.5:
“It’s really hot today, isn’t it?” Maria, my best friend, asks, still chewing the potato chips, and squinting.
“Really? I don’t feel it.”
“It’s August. Summer.”
“Hmmm… probably warm.”
“You’re not normal.” She says in a joking tone.
I frown. I hate it when someone says I’m not normal. But I am. I am. I am. I want to be normal.
She holds her arms up in the air, feigning innocence. “I’m kidding, Jane.”
“It’s not funny.”
Some people may think I’m living a simple life; eating dinner with parents, studying, hanging out with friends. And yeah, I’m living that kind of life, but except for having this unusual ability. Some say I’m not normal, they say my name is the only thing normal about myself and most of it is true which is the reason why some people avoids me –avoids being with me.
But good thing Maria is by my side. She stood me up whenever I’m in trouble. Basically, she’s been with me ever since we were kids; living peacefully in bliss, here in Chicago.
I sigh, fixing my position from sitting down to lying down. I rest my head on the trunk of the big tree shading us.
“Ungh.” I stretch out my hands, thinking that living my life like this peaceful with the perfect weather, makes me drown in nostalgia.
“Hey, want to grab something on the way home later?” Maria asks, her hands on the back of her head. She looked like sleeping.
“Where to?”
“Taco Bell, or McDonalds, Starbucks or something?”
“Fast foods again, Maria?”
“Don’t huddle the love between food and me, Jane. This is serious.”
I groan, shaking my head.
“Come on,” She pokes me.
I waited for exactly a minute then I glance at her direction and finally say, “…Donuts first.”
She laughs, “Way to go. Fat foods on the way.”
I stand up, wiping the leaves and grass on my pants. “I’ll go get a drink.”
“Pepsi for me, Jane.”
“Money,” I demand with my hand held up, my palm open.
She pouts, “Boo. Cheapskate.”
I roll my eyes and went towards the cafeteria on the other side of the building.
The cafeteria is full –too crowded. I affix my eyes on the isolated vending machine at the back.
And basically, this is my life. My everyday life. One of my ordinary days, including today, is sitting together with my best friend, Maria, eating chips outside, under the tree, during our lunch break. Though, it’s totally cliché, I enjoy sinking in these moments with her attending this normal university, peacefu–
“WHERE IS MARY JANE FOX?!” The cafeteria door swung open. A loud clatter of noises came from the tall blond guy at the door. He had four strong bulky bodyguards that look like wrestlers around him.
All of the students (including me) surprisingly traded their glances over him with his powerful aura. He’s wearing a suit which I presume he’s the boss –a business man to boot. But he looks really young to be one; he looks like he belongs to our age. And he’s too shiny, too elegant to look at.
And he’s looking for me, with a gun on his hands. He has a gun. I don’t want to look the horror on my face right now.
Everybody points their gazes at me. Then he immediately went straight ahead me, smirking. He slicks his shining blond hair up with his sun glasses on top of his head.
“W-What?” I ask. My heart thumping from the nervousness I feel. I step back, turning my hands into fist. He’s dangerous. Too dangerous.
“W-What do you want?” I ask again. He was arrogantly taking a step forward at me.
But he did not utter a word.
“What’s your business with me?” This time, I was composed. I glare back at him.
“Business?” He finally says smoothly. Then he choked a laugh, “Well,” He points the gun on my face. The shriek of shock of the students flooded the whole cafeteria. “I came to kidnap you, Mary Jane Fox.”
My legs instantly turned Jell-O, wobbling and I end up sitting on the cold hard ground. What? What’s with him? What the hell is wrong with him? No, what the hell is wrong with my life?
My surrounding turns buzzy. I can’t hear anything. I can’t see anything except for this man in front of me, this man who wants to kidnap me, this man who wants to kill me?
I was just living my life peacefully ten minutes ago. What would they want in a commoner like me? We’re not even rich. My family can’t even pay for the ransom money, or they simply want to kill me? Moreover, pointing a gun at a defenceless girl, the WORST.
But I’m not letting them. I’m not letting him.
I stand up, getting my full force, but before I could strike the gun, this guy immediately swifts on my back side and held down my arms with only one hand and the gun on his other hand.
“Pfft,” He grins. This guy!
I could feel his breath on my hair. Then he carefully smoothes my hair with his knuckles. I closed my eyes, waiting for some sign whether I would live or die this day. He leaned in closer, fixing my hair to the other side, exposing my neck.
“It’s good to see your hair so lovely and smooth.” He says; touching the tip of my neck with his nose then inhales. Goosebumps.
“I was supposed to kidnap you,” He continued. “But, it ends here.” Pointing the gun on my temple. I’m gonna die. I’m gonna die. I’m gonna die.
A loud ‘BANG’ echoed the whole cafeteria. I wait a minute to feel the pain and sensation, but it’s a surprise nothing happened. I can’t feel anything. I slowly open my eyes; expected to see some blood shedding gore, but none of it was around.
He releases my arms, and I look back at him; now we were face to face. The guy is smiling at me, the gun still pointed at me with a strange paper attached to the tip of it.
I squint, reading the strange note on it. “’Will you m–‘”
“Marry me, Mary Jane Fox?” He continues.
My mouth drops open, looking at him with my eyebrows furrowed. Everyone is shock as I am. And I still wasn’t sure if I heard him right, but the note says so. “Wha –huh?”
“Starting today, you are to be my wife.”
“What? That's absurd!" I shout.
He ignores my protest and continues, “Oh, I’m Andrew Parker, 19 years old,” He grabs the paper inside the gun, holding it out with a sheepish smile on his face. “and starting today, your husband, my perfect girl."
