Akito Shinonome x Reader

Prompt: Akito confesses his feelings to the reader.

[REQUESTED]

Story is based on the Vocaloid song Childhood Blues :)

~~~
"If from this hill, you watch the sky while the sun is setting for 51 days, your love will be reciprocated."
Akito listened to his band partner's words. He scoffed as he heard this, but maybe, it was true. He'll have to test it out and see if it does work. After all, he really wanted to confess to his childhood best friend.
~~~

"Akito, do you really think it's going to work? How desperate are you?" You rolled your eyes as your childhood best friend told you the rumor he wanted to test out. Akito pouted at your words as he slowly stopped riding his bike once you both reached the top of the bridge.

"I'm not an idiot! It's just a good luck charm!" He retorted back. In reality, the man was desperate for love and affection from the other. He yearned to see you smile only for him, eyes shining brightly with sparkles, and soft locks of your hair running through his fingers. He was in love, after all.

"Seriously, you never listen to me when I say anything. It's just a rumor that'll never work. Get over it," you sighed. Akito ignored them, as they have already decided to try this rumor out to see if it would work.

~~~
Akito realized that day by day, his feelings for you grew. He's gotten a lot more empathetic and sensitive, to say the least, especially when he's been seeing you soften up your feelings as well. The way you leaned your head on his shoulder, the way you talked to him in a soft and smooth voice, and the slightly flustered version of you when he approached you all started to make him fall deep for you.
He knew at this point, he was desperate to have you as a romantic partner. He couldn't bear the thought of another being yours.
So, over the 51 days, he kept picking up small pieces of courage to be able to confess his feelings, and let those feelings reach you.
~~~

Akito watched as your face kept souring more and more each day as you both headed to the bridge to watch the sunset together. Once you both stopped on top of the bridge, he turned his head towards you.

"Seriously, if you hate being here so much, you don't have to come!" Akito exclaimed, not understanding why you kept coming to watch the sunset with him, but you shook your head.

"But it's getting dark, so it's dangerous to be out here by yourself," you lectured him before leaning your head on his shoulder, making the other's eyebrows furrow.

"I'm not a child anymore! I can do whatever I want!" Akito scoffed at you.

"Yeah, whatever. Anyways, you're probably not going to keep up with this rumor," you rolled your eyes at him.

"Yeah, just watch me," the man smirked as the sky faded from blue to red.

~~~
Akito kept hiding away his feelings to himself. He realized that with you, he can be himself. He was much more relaxed when he sees you and hears your voice. He would also vent to you about all the heartbreaks he's been through with you, and somehow, through all this, you'd always be there to support him. It was one of the reasons why he fell in love with you, and hence, why he wanted his feelings to reach you.
But then, as time passed by and the two of you became teenagers, you both grew apart from each other. For example, he was apart of the sporty and popular group, while you were with the shyer and nerdier people. Being apart of different groups led to you both not seeing each other much as you'd both be at different locations, and if you both did pass by each other, you both ignored each other until the end of the day. It did hurt, ignoring each other, but you didn't want to mess with each other's groups.
Another example was you two being split into different classrooms. While it was disappointing, there was nothing you could do. Over time, it didn't hurt as much, as you both have different friends in your classes now.
And, well, preferences changed as well. Akito was into soccer, loved running on his free time, and he was into singing. Meanwhile, you were into reading, playing video games, and watching television.
So many things changed between the two of you, especially when one day, Akito saw you hang out with a certain male, which made his blood boil. He watched as you laughed loudly to the other's jokes, which made his heart shatter. This was when Akito began ignoring you more during school, and he even began to distance himself from you outside of school. Despite his efforts to get away, you still tried to keep in touch with him. Knowing his own feelings for you, he decided to ignore the negative feelings for the man and keep talking to you. This led to the two of you keeping in contact somehow, even though he knew it wouldn't be easy to control his own feelings.
'I guess being childhood friends isn't easy,' Akito thought to himself as he watched you hanging out with the male again.
'Man, this is kinda embarrassing, being jealous of these two even though they're not in a relationship.'
~~~

The two of you stood on the bridge again, watching the sun setting for the 51st time. Two shadows were casted behind the two of you, darkening the bridge a purplish gray color. When Akito turned to look at you, you looked like you were about to cry. His heart broke seeing you in this state.

Struggling with words, you turned to your childhood best friend and choked out, "Who'd you fall for this time? I'll help you out."

Hearing you speak, he thought about all those times you were by his side. He watched as you would fake a smile when he talked about his past crushes, even though you had feelings for the man. When things didn't go well, you would pat his back and give him comforting words no one else would. He loved you, everything about you. He was just too blind to see it right in front of his eyes.

His body was shaking with anxiety, but he reached out his hand to you, grabbed ahold of your left sleeve, and said, "—This is why I fell in love with you."

Your face turned bright red and you faked a pout. You used your hands to hide your face. He loved the way you would hide your embarrassment from him. And, he realized, he did love this part of you, too.

"You're really late," you grinned as you pinched his cheek. "But I love you too!"

Ah, his feelings finally reached your ears. And, maybe, the rumor was true since it worked on you...
