legacy day

the dreaded day was finally here; legacy day. and as nervous as i was, i couldn't help but be apprehensive for raven. the look on her face didn't exactly express enthusiasm.

i walked with her and maddie down the school's halls after class was over with for the day. i'd just had advanced ballet class. let's just say duchess and i aren't the easy dancers to beat.

raven suddenly stopped, turning to face us.

"you two have to help me." she pleaded, placing a hand on each of our shoulders. "i don't feel like i can sign the storybook of legends, but i don't want to let everyone down either."

maddie spoke, "and do not forget the whole "if you don't sign, your story disappears. poof! and you may vanish into oblivion."" she exaggerated before taking a deep breath. "that's a thing, you know, and it's gotta hurt."

"but we don't know if that's true." raven countered. i turned to maddie and nodded, agreeing with rae.

"but what if it is?"

"but what if it's not?"

"but what if it is?" maddie repeated.

"you're not helping." despite it all, raven cracked a smile.

"i do know one thing," i said. raven and maddie turned to face me. "no one should be able to tell you how your story goes. and if this swan knows something, then we're going to be just fine."

raven's shoulders loosened.

"wait a tick." maddie smiled wide. "i think i know who can help~!" she sang.

raven tilted her head.

i just laughed. but if maddie has someone who can help us out, then i was willing to take the chance. she may be mad, but she was always going to find a way to help.

we followed maddie through the school, coming across apple and blondie on the way. apple practically slammed her locker shut upon seeing us.

"raven!" she called. "there you are! we have to talk!"

raven grabbed maddie and i, and ran.

"come back!" apple called after us.

after we turned the corner, maddie took the lead and lead us to the library. specifically, the back of the library. there was a door there i'd never seen.

but to be fair, i've never been this far into the library to see it.

maddie knocked, and next thing i knew, all three of us were in a whole new area of the school. wicked.

"if anyone knows the truth about the storybook of legends, it's giles grimm."

and there he was in the flesh. the headmaster's brother.

"feathers and friends, together, alone." he bowed to us in greeting.

"he's speaking riddlish!" maddie clapped. she leaned in and explained, "he was cursed with a babble spell. makes him sound, you know, cuckoo,"

i hummed. that made sense. but who would want to curse him? he seems like such a sweetie.

"he says it's nice to has us here."

"ask him about the book," raven urged. "if we don't sign, are we really gonna.. disappear?"

maddie hummed, turning to giles. "can a musical chair change its tone when the table of granite is inscribed with a bone?"

"hmm." giles scratched his beard in thought for a quick moment before looked back at us. "the king who sings with pages of sky fears too much the dawn that rises with lies."

maddie inched closer to him, tapping her chin. "he says there's something wrong with the book, and that if you two don't sign, your stories.. will.."

"what? what?!" raven asked, anxious for the answer. i held onto her arm.

but maddie and giles were sitting and maddie's tea table having tea. this girl was something else. truly. and i loved it.

"oh, sorry." maddie giggled. "if you don't sign, your stories will continue."

"oh, good," i sighed, letting our a relieved exhale. raven did the same.

"i think." she added. from the sudden statement, a honk escaped me out of surprise. i covered my mouth.

the perks of being a swan, i guess. not complaining, just saying.

"you think?!"

"hey! riddlish is not an exact language." maddie smiled.

time skip

the sun had begun to set, the now purple sky signaling the start of the legacy day ceremony.

everyone looked beautiful in their formal attire. it was probably the only thing i liked about legacy day. the outfits.

and you better believe i dressed up for the occasion.

i was sitting up front next to maddie and cerise. they both looked amazing!

i even caught a glimpse of dante on the other side of the venue. he looked good. handsome, even. not that i was going to admit it, but still.

"next, we have apple white." headmaster grimm announced.

apple stepped up to the podium looking beautiful as always. doves even landed on her arms. could this girl get anymore perfect?

"i am apple white," she began. the dove flew off. "daughter of snow white, and i am ready to pledge my destiny." her key appeared and fell into her hand. apple unlocked the book.

the mirror of her destiny appeared and showed her her happily ever after. she smiled wide as the mirror turned into a quill. she took it and signed her name in the storybook.

cheers and applause erupted from the crowd. mainly from the royal's half of the audience.

apple blew a kiss to the crowd before stepping off the podium.

headmaster grimm stepped up. "and next, raven queen."

raven stood at the edge of the stage. thunder crashed in the sky. she apprehensively stepped up to the podium. she took a deep breath.

"i am raven queen, daughter of the evil queen, and.. i pledge.. uh.. i" she stammered. she looked back at apple, who was bouncing in anticipation and headmaster grimm, who wasn't exactly giving her the friendliest look.

reluctantly, raven held out her hand and let her key fall into it.

whatever she saw in that mirror wasn't good. the mirror turned into the quill. she reached for it.

'come on rae..'

she suddenly stopped. a newfound hope settled into my stomach. she looked down at the storybook of legends with a scowl, then looked back at the crowd.

"i am raven queen, and i'm going to write my own destiny! my happily ever after starts now!" she slammed the book shut, and the mirrors projecting her shattered. i couldn't help but smile wide.

the royals gasped, and the rebels cheered. i stood from my seat and clapped for her. she deserved this. and i was going be with her every step of the way.
