after setting everything up, the five of us head back to the school just in time for lunch.
we manage to find an empty table after getting our food. i sit between dante and cupid while briar and hopper sit on the opposite side of the table.
across from us, hunter sits at his usual table across from cedar and cerise.
humphrey tries to sit in the empty seat next to him, but he puts something down, telling him politely that he's saving the seat of ashlynn.
they're too cute. i smile.
"so," dante starts. "how do you guys plan to keep this party under wraps anyway?"
cupid taps her chin. "we're still figuring that out." she tells him.
i nod. "especially since duchess caught wind of it," i set my fork down. "at this point she's bound to take this down."
"we just have to make sure she doesn't know where the party is," briar says. "if she can't find us, we won't have to worry about her."
she had a point. we just had to find a way to throw duchess off. but how?
just then, ashlynn walks into the castleteria.
and by the looks of it, she doesn't look too happy.
i can't hear what she's telling hunter, but a moment later, the two of them move to a nearby corner. and i can't help but wonder what caused her unease.
we watch from a distance. ashlynn walks off, and hunter stands there looking like a kicked puppy.
what just happened?
i get up and leave the castleteria to try and find ashlynn. when i do find her, she's halfway to her dorm looking to be on the verge of tears.
"ash..?"
she turns to me, wiping her eyes. "hi, y/n.."
"sweetheart, what just happened?" i ask softly. "you were so happy a while ago."
"i.." ash pauses, regaining herself. "i broke up with hunter."
there's something i wasn't expecting today.
"..what for?" my head tilts in confusion. those two were like the sun and the sky, always finding a way to brighten each others lives. knowing that they've broken up must feel like ash's world is ending.
"i thought it would have been a good thing. telling everyone that we were dating. but that wasn't the case at all, y/n, everything is worse!" she explains. "most of own friends are against it, and our stories could be at risk.."
my heart breaks at hearing ashlynn's words.
"ash.." i try to say.
ashlynn wipes a stray tear from her eye. "i'll see you at the party, y/n."
she turns and leaves, leaving me alone in the empty hallway.
ashlynn and hunter broke up, and it was tearing their hearts apart.
