Chapter 2 - Chosen family.

Avery Delgado

A year earlier.

"Come on Lancelot, you'll be there with us." Ashley plead with the guard who has been watching over me since my birth.

"Yeah, like last time" He snorts, with an eyeroll. "No way"

We share a look, and Ashley counterattack the lesson he learned last time. "We won't run off, we'll stay right by your side, the whole time, we promise" She gazes up at him with pleading eyes, and a stuck out bottom lip. "Please"

He groans, as he stares at us, and we grin, knowing he's caved.

"You stay right where I can see you, and you don't go into the meadow before I've given you permission, is that clear?" He stares at us with a heated look, and we nod hurriedly.

"Crystal" Ashley answer for the both of us.

He nods slowly, the uneasiness he feels showing on his hesitant face. "Fine" he reluctantly says.

"Mom is going to love them" Ash says to me, and I nod along.

Mom has always had a love for flowers, and her absolute favorite reside in a meadow outside the castle borders. She saw them many years ago, when she traveled outside the castle, and has been in love with them ever since.

The problem is that they only grow in that meadow, and it's a dangerous place. Anywhere outside the castle borders is dangerous, but many creatures have been seen on that meadow, so it's deemed very dangerous.

Which is why it's off limit, and why mom hasn't seen her favorite flowers in so long.

Ash and I decided we wanted to go there to pick a bouquet of flowers for her, like we tried to do last time. Last time we didn't make it that far, because we kept running off, leaving Lancelot in disarray, so he cut the trip short, and we came home empty handed.

This time we are determined to come home with flowers for mom.

The walk is done in silence from my side. Ash is happily chatting poor Lancelot' ear off. He takes it like a true gentleman and nod along, sometimes answering verbally, only encouraging her to keep going, because I know he doesn't have the heart to seem uninterested, even though I know he is.

After all she's talking about her dolls and their recent tea party.

I chuckle inwardly at his misfortune, but leave him in his misery, not wanting to be the one to hear all about her dolls and tea party.

We make it to the meadow, and Lancelot usher us behind a tree in front of the treeless meadow, as he scans it thoroughly, before entering it. His gaze keeps flickering back to the tree we hide behind, making sure we're out of harm's way, and probably to make sure we haven't run off yet.

He comes back after making sure it's safe and usher us out from behind the tree "Pick your flowers." He tells us, as he takes an imposing stance, close to us.

Ashley quickly gets to work and starts picking flower after flower. She hands me the freshly picked flowers, so she can pick more, and I hold the flowers closely to my chest, as if I was guarding them from a foe.

A whimper is carried by the wind, and I look around the abandoned meadow trying to locate the sound. Another whimper is carried within earshot, and I look out into the open.

"You heard that?" I ask Ashley, keeping my gaze wandering.

"Heard what?" she asks, not looking up from the flowers.
