AUGUST 2022

As the last strains of music faded away and the final guests bid their farewells, Karlee sank into a chair, her body trembling with exhaustion. The wedding had been a chaos of activity, and as the adrenaline of the day began to wane, she felt the familiar symptoms of her Type 1 diabetes creeping in.

Her vision blurred and her head throbbed with a dull ache as she struggled to focus on her surroundings. She knew she should have been more diligent about monitoring her glucose levels throughout the day, but the demands of coordinating Marcy's wedding had left her little time to prioritize her own health.

Arthur rushed over to her side, concern etched across his features as he took in Karlee's pale complexion and labored breathing. "Keks, are you okay?" he asked.

Karlee forced a weak smile, trying to push through the fog of fatigue that clouded her mind. "I'm fine," she assured, though her words rang hollow even to her own ears.

But Arthur wasn't convinced, his brow furrowing with concern as he reached out to gently touch Karlee's forehead. "You're burning up," he observed. "We need to get you some help."

Karlee struggled to her feet, her limbs feeling heavy and uncoordinated as she leaned on her boyfriend for support. Together, they made their way to the nearest quiet corner of the venue, where Arthur helped Karlee sit down and retrieved her emergency glucose monitor from her purse.

As Karlee pricked her finger and tested her blood sugar levels, her heart raced with anxiety, the fear of what she might find gnawing at her insides. And when the results flashed across the screen, confirming her worst fears, she felt a wave of panic wash over her.

Her glucose levels were dangerously low, and she knew she needed medical attention immediately. But even as the room spun around her and darkness threatened to swallow her whole, Karlee couldn't shake the guilt that weighed heavily on her shoulders.

She had neglected her health in favor of Marcy's wedding, and now she was paying the price. But as Arthur wrapped her in a comforting embrace and reassured her that everything would be okay, Karlee knew that she was not alone. She was just glad Marcy and Max were here to see her state. She could hear Arthur speaking to someone, while she drank the coconut water.

"I called your doctor, he is going to send over a fellow doctor that lives in Tuscany to check on you but has advised we keep you hydrated," Arthur said.

Karlee nodded weakly, her throat parched and her limbs heavy with fatigue. The news that a doctor would be arriving soon brought her a small measure of relief.
