Author's Note
I'm not entirely convinced by this chapter so it will be heavily edited soon.
Three days.
That's how long it's been since both Sophia and I heard one singular gunshot that echoed through the trees. It was distant but loud enough that Sophia clutched onto me for an entire hour after.
Since then, I had to make the tough decision to either follow the noise or flee in the opposite direction. Between our growling bellies that were surviving off edible weeds and nuts and the dehydration that threatened to knock us off our feet, it was hard to think about anything else other than how hungry I was. I gave most of the findings to Sophia. I wouldn't stand to hear her stomach growl.
Ultimately, I chose to follow the sound after a few days of staying hidden in surrounding trees. We'd traveled east I think. I was never navigationally gifted so it made the whole thing harder. But self-preservation kept us pushing everyday.
The bullet must've been fired by one of our group. If I had to guess— Shane. He was rather trigger-happy lately. It gave me hope though, to think that they were still close-by. They hadn't completely abandoned us yet. If there was one person I knew wouldn't give up so soon, it would be Glenn.
On the other hand, there was also a chance that the gun belonged to someone else. A stranger, or a group of them, close by. The thought made my heart race. It frightened me more than anything, especially given I was a woman without any actual weapon and Sophia was just a child.
"Do you think my mommy is looking for me?"
I glanced down at Sophia who was clutching my hand as we traveled through the trees. In my other hand I held a long sturdy branch I'd sharpened with some rocks. It wasn't much, but I'm sure it would hold up against a walker if need be.
"Yeah, of course she is, Soph. Don't doubt it for a second." I mustered my best smile, despite the fatigue in my face. In fact, my entire body hurt. Every drag of my feet felt like sandpaper against my bones.
If only I could find the right direction to the highway, we'd find that creek and have a fresh supply of water. We'd been rationing out the little water I had in the bottle from my small pack.
"Then why hasn't she found us yet?" She asked.
"Well, you know how Lori is, she's probably keeping your mother safe. It wouldn't be safe to search for us into the night, would it?"
"No, it wouldn't. That's why we stay in the trees at night too."
"Exactly. I'm sure every morning she's searching for us."
"I'm glad Lori's keeping her company. My momma can get very upset. She cries a lot."
I glanced at Sophia who was staring at the ground sadly.
