( june 1832 )

CORINNE AND AMÉLIE'S RENDEZVOUS in the city, while exciting, meant that the two young maids fell behind on their duties. Although Monsieur Guillaume's absence allowed them more freedom, they'd almost forgotten that it didn't mean their responsibilities went away entirely. Their entire morning was spent catching up on the duties they neglected while out in the city the day before— which, in turn, caused them to fall behind on their usual morning routines.

When Corinne and Amélie emerged from their chambers that morning, they were met with a plate of pain au chocolat waiting for them in the kitchen (which, as Corinne had predicted, had been prepared by the kitchen maids as a thank-you for their favor.) Despite her foul mood toward having to spend the day playing catch up, Amélie was delighted. Corinne was also grateful, but she'd already gotten what she wanted. She satisfied her curiosity about the rally she'd read about in Enjolras' book, while also getting the opportunity to both see and speak with him again.

But the pastries that morning were, admittedly, a delicious bonus.

After their breakfast, the two maids parted ways to begin the long day they had ahead of them. Amélie wandered off to work on the laundry while Corinne decided to head to the sun room. Her journey to the city prevented her from caring for the plants yesterday, and she knew that they would be in need of some water and trimming.

The late morning sun shone through the windows as Corinne made her way through the room, softly humming a tune beneath her breath. She tried to focus on her work, but she was finding it difficult to do so. Her mind was elsewhere, constantly moving between the rally she attended yesterday and the man who led it.

She realized that perhaps her curiosity wasn't satiated. She wanted to learn more, but how? She hadn't any idea when the next rally was, nor did she think that she could abandon her duties to attend it. Should she ask Enjolras? Would he even allow her to be there?

Corinne was pulled from her thoughts as the door to the sun room swung open. She looked up from her watering, part of her hoping to find the very man who plagued her thoughts. She bit back her disappointment upon finding Lucien instead.

"Bonjour, mademoiselle," he greeted her with a slight dip of his head. "Monsieur Enjolras has requested to see you."

Corinne was so surprised that she nearly lost her grip on the watering can. Enjolras was asking for her? Biting back her nervousness, she asked: "Did he say why?"

Lucien shook his head. "No, he only asked for me to bring you to him," he said. With a wave of his hand, he turned to leave. "Come on. It's best not to keep him waiting."
