. . . . .

( june 1832 )

AFTER SPEAKING TO MONSIEUR Fournier about Enjolras' condition, Corinne was more eager than ever to rejoin him by his bedside. The doctor said that the wounds were healing well for their severity, but he wasn't out of the woods yet.

"He must stay confined to his bed for a week yet," he told her. "One wrong move could cause any one of those wounds to reopen— and, God forbid, if it were the one above his heart, or even the one in his leg, it could cost him his life."

"Is he in pain?" wondered Corinne with a worried look shot toward the door that currently separated her from Enjolras.

"Of course he is," Monsieur Fournier responded. "Both physically and mentally, and he will be for some time— but he's strong. His body survived for hours with six open gunshot wounds. It is only uphill from here."

He rested a hand on Corinne's shoulder for a brief moment before saying his goodbyes. As soon as he was gone, she turned back to Enjolras' bedroom. She reached for his door, only to freeze when a hand came out to catch her wrist.

It was Lucien, who'd been silently listening to the conversation between Corinne and the doctor up until then. "Not so fast," he said with a glint of amusement in his eyes. "You convinced me to wait until you could speak to Monsieur Fournier, but I will not you put it off any longer. We have some things we need to discuss."

Although she had no idea what it was that Lucien wanted to talk about, Corinne knew better than to argue. With one last worrisome look toward Enjolras' bedroom, she followed after him.

. . . . .

Only moments after Corinne followed Lucien into the servants' dining hall, she was already on her feet and heading toward the door once more. She could hardly believe what she'd just heard the valet say. "Absolutely not," she grumbled unhappily. "It's out of the question."

"Corinne, you must think about this." Lucien reached out to catch her arm, tugging her to a stop. She whipped around to glare at him, which immediately made him release his hold on her. "We must think about this. Monsieur Enjolras is a wanted fugitive, and no matter how loyal we are to him, we must also be loyal to the law."

"So you are suggesting, after we fought so hard to bring him back here and save his life, that we just hand him off to the police?" Corinne challenged. She scoffed and turned away when Lucien nodded in confirmation. "You're absolutely mad if you think I'd agree to this."

Amélie, who'd been waiting in the dining hall when Corinne had arrived with Lucien, placed a comforting hand on her forearm. "I don't see why we should turn him in when all he was trying to do is create a better future for people like us," she offered calmly. Corinne shot her a grateful look.
