Cadence descended the stairs of the boys' dormitory, he wasn't used to seeing the common room empty and quiet, there were gifts under the Christmas tree, and his name was written on three of them, opening the one from Jasper he received a new books, muggle mystery books that he loved to read, the second gift was from Kyle under the name of Kale that Cadence called Kyle, he scoffed at the blueberry muffins, with a note, 'Borrowed the kitchen for a while, hope they taste good,' Cadence took a bite nostalgia crashing on him like a wave, the same taste and flavour, his favourite blueberry muffins which only one person baked to perfection, stuffing another one in his mouth he unwrapped the third gift, it had no name on it, inside the box Cadence found a letter,
'Dear Cadence,
It's been years since I contacted Jasper when I found out you were at Hogwarts, I wish you a Merry Christmas, I would like to apologise for not being there for you two when you needed me the most, I didn't disappear into thin air, I have been in Brazil all these years, trying to find out how your parents and my brother disappeared,
It pains me to inform you but they did not merely disappear, they were killed, Celeste's cousin had something to do with the cause of their death, Jasper has been investigating in the wrong direction all these years, Robbert didn't leave to meet his muggle friends with Celeste that evening, he went to Knockturn Alley,
All these years I carefully tracked down the wizards and witches from Knockturn Alley and found out recently that Robbert was in the place the night they disappeared, I found the man who killed my brother, his wand was taken away, and the last spell he cast was the killing curse,
A lot is yet to be discovered but I hope that you find it in your heart to forgive this cowardly uncle of yours, I wrote to Jasper a month ago but he didn't reply, I did not wish to inform you through a letter but you deserve to know, I shall return soon,
Your uncle
Ivan Darren Morris'
Wet ink stained the letter, and trembling fingers reread it several times before Cadence squeezed his eyes shut, running out of the common room he barged into Kyle's office, the Professor was arranging his desk when the boy placed the letter on his desk, Kyle stared at Cadence's tear-stained face before he read the letter, slumping in his chair he took his glasses off and squeezed his palm against his eyes, "Cadence, hear m-"
"You knew!" Cadence's voice cracked as he pointed an accusing finger at Kyle,
"Jasper and you both knew! How long, Kyle?" He asked, stumbling against the chairs, Kyle stood up and reached his hand out when Cadence swallowed his pain,
"How long have you known?"Kyle sighed and ran a hand through his hair, "Jasper found out a year ago,"
Cadence shook his head, taking shaky breaths, "He didn't tell me you didn't tell me, I kept hoping Mom and Dad would return one day when they have been dead for twelve years!" Cadence cried, kicking the table,
"Cadence, Jasper wasn't certain. He wanted to conf -"
"Confirm our parents were dead? He was waiting to confirm before telling me?" Cadence interjected slamming his hand on the table, the scented candle at the edge dropped to the floor, glass and wax strewn around the table, "I looked at him with hopeful eyes any time I saw him writing to you, I thought that my parents would be found one day, but they are dead!" Kyle reached his hand out to touch Cadence's shoulder, "You liars! You knew yet you two kept it from you, laughing and joking like nothing happened!"
"Cadence! Jasper didn't believe it, nor did I, we kept investigating to find the truth, like you I found out through this letter it was true," Kyle said calmly, "Cadence, I am sorry, I am so sorry about your paren-"
