Alex and August took off at a run, roughly clipping their helmets on their heads. Alex pinched the skin of his throat in the buckle. Rushing to give chase to the car that was moving at a speedy, but not dangerous acceleration. It was a chase, a simple, safe, vehicular chase, after their mate who had way more magic than any witch at Golden Green.
They had never before seen anything like her display of power tonight. It had been beautiful and intimidating. August had felt awe from his wolf. Which was quickly drowned out by a shame spiral that was starting to form inside Alex.
Alex had watched his mate, with her still, healing broken body, manage to light up the quarry and the sky with her magic. He had thought her weak. He hadn't wanted her. He had been so ready to overlook her at as his possible mate that night at the diner. Had considered looking towards a second mate when by the process of elimination, it had to be the too thin blonde with bleached hair. It had always been her Alex had been chasing for years.
August nudged at the mindlink, 'Neither of us saw her, it could have been her magic masking. She did not want to be found.' August tired to reassure his brother, stop the shame spiral. Nothing good would happen if they managed to actually keep up with the car and join her at a restaurant if Alex was in a bad mood.
No response from Alex.
August persisted. 'Lumi's magic always did strange things.' They had both heard all about how even being pregnant with their sisters had been strange for their mother, medical devices did not work because Lumi had a magic shield or buffer even as a fetus.
August at least got a slight nod from Alex, before he zoomed to be closer to the car where their mate was travelling. Safely. August had seen the demon mark the rune to lock the door with an unbreakable bond. His wolf had felt some possessive jealousy at the action, but August himself was glad. She had thrown herself from a moving car once already. He never, wanted to watch anything like that happen again.
August did not like the demon, and was confident that the sentiment was mutual. August watched people. Binh might be a demon, but he was showing all the signs that he truly cared for August's mate's well being. Friendships had been started with less in common.
The ragtag convoy sped back to the highway, taking an exit at a town with no reputation, driving through the town to the other side. Finally pulling into a pothole speckled dirt lot for a roadside diner, housed inside what once was a log home with red painted trim and a red tin roof to match.
While Binh took the time to park, release the rune locking the passenger door closed, and helped Ariel into her wheelchair, Alex and August were able to catch up, park their bikes and were once again pressing in too close for her comfort.
Ariel shrinked away from their presence. There were a lot of new, strange sensations sparking through her nervous system after handling so much magic in the quarry. Having both of them so close, her unable to run or move away was an awful lot to experience. They weren't contained in a zoo enclosure, and Ariel couldn't put a firewall between herself and them, not in such close quarters to an open restaurant, that seemed to be pretty popular by the several sat tables she could see through the window and the number of cars in the lot tonight.
Binh held up his hand. Both men instantly stopped moving in their tracks like they had hit an invisible wall. Glad the pups had finally, mercifully come to heel. His mild pride at their behaviour only lasted long enough for him to see that their postures were unnaturally frozen, "I made a wall of air around them." She whispered to him, letting it go and Binh watched as they regained their balance but mercifully, they stayed put.
Ariel was shifting in her seat like she couldn't get comfortable."It's like they are making the air feel heavy?" Ariel whispered, hiding herself and Binh inside another, unique spell of air magic. A thin shell of air magic vibrating in such a way as to cancel out anything she said. Or what Binh said back to her.
