Shifting uncomfortably in my chair, I glance up at the adults conversing, their faces scrunched up in annoyance as they talk. My dad really doesn't like his father-in-law, I can tell by the constant rolls of his eyes and the discreet judging.
I knew the two families were never on good terms, but I didn't know to what extend. To be fair, I would've despised my father as well considering he forced my mother into a marriage when she was fairly young.
The man who looks like the younger version of my grandfather is Aaryan, and he seems just as sour as grandfather. From what Verona's told me, Aaryan is our first cousin from mother's side, the son of one of my mother's brothers. She had a total of 5 older brothers and two older sisters, none of which I know.
We're all gathered in grandfather's office, since I am the sole subject of this family gathering, I get to sit down whereas the others had no choice but to stand up.
Today isn't the day I receive my inheritance, it's just a small 'meeting' set up by my grandfather so he can greet our family and go through a couple of rules.
After a few moments, everyone has settled in their designated places, Delia to my left and father to my right.
Picking up a few documents, neatly stacked on the corner of his desk, he grabbed a pen that looks like it has been made of pure gold.
"I need the receiver to sign these documents that state the inheritance they receive will be purely their responsibility, whatever consequences the inheritance brings for the recipient will not affect the previous person who had ownership of the inheritance, neither shall it be given back to them."
An overwhelming feeling washed over me as I processed the words he had stated. Consequences?
Something inside of me, something that resided in the deepest parts of my conscious warned me to step back, deny the inheritance and leave it in the hands of the trusted. But as my father placed the papers infront of me and harshly pushed the pen into my hands, I had no control over myself as I etched towards the paper.
The silent atmosphere created more tension as the pen scrapped across the paper, before it fell out of my hands as I gazed down at the document.
The one thing everyone had taught me to do was read the goddamn terms and conditions, and what the hell did I do?
Ignored it.
Even if I took back my word, they would've had a copy of my signature and if they were so eager to give this inheritance away, they would've forced it to seem as if I did claim it.
I could feel Lucian's figure looming over me, the air shifting as his cold voice broke the silence.
"What consequences."
