Nico didn't like flowers.
He wasn't heartless. He could understand the beauty of the things, but one too many shifts in his stepmother's store when he was younger had him thinking they were a little overrated.
Especially when Nico had the opposite of a green thumb. He didn't like flowers. They certainly didn't like him. So it was a mutual agreement between flowers and himself, that he didn't try to force their relationship.
So, colour Nico confused when a vase of sunflowers appeared on his countertop. And then continued to appear even after he threw the last bunch out when they began to shed their petals.
Logically he knew it was Will's doing, but Will never owned up to it. His boyfriend seemed content to never mention his morning escapades to the local florist.
Maybe Will had noticed Nico's stress in Hazel's absence. Maybe he saw it in the tense set of his shoulders or the downturned corners of his smiles and wanted to do something nice.
The thought of Will noticing such things brought a warm, giddy feeling that Nico didn't allow himself to dwell on too long.
Especially with how little the two saw each other of late. With Will producing his own album, aiming for an August release date, he was in the studio more often than not. And as much as Nico missed his boyfriend, he was almost grateful that Will was kept busy.
He didn't want to explain his complicated feelings around The Seven's tour.
He didn't want to talk about Bianca.
And he had his own album in production. The less Will was at his apartment or organising dates for the two of them, the less chance he would notice Nico's suspiciously crammed schedule.
But still, despite their time apart, Will gave him a new vase of flowers every week.
And Nico had never liked flowers...but he thinks sunflowers might just be the exception.
"Why sunflowers?" Nico asked that morning when he finally caught Will - bright yellow flowers in hand - coming back from his morning walk.
To which Will shrugged, "I didn't know what your favourite flower was so I chose mine. And your apartment needed a pop of colour."
Nico wrinkled his nose in disgust, "They're just so bright. "
"Well, I like them." Will laughed, arranging the flowers in vase as he spoke. Nico refused to admit he liked them too because they reminded him of Will.
"What is your favourite flower then?"
Nico shrugged, "I don't really have one. Too many hours in my stepmother's shop ruined florals for me."
Will frowned at that, pausing what he was doing to look Nico over. "You can't seriously tell me you don't like flowers."
"Flowers don't like me." Nico deadpanned.
"Sunflowers do!"
Nico smiled then, he didn't mean to but it just happened. It happened a lot when Will was around.
