As Taylor sat in stunned silence, her mind reeling from the shock of Joe's death, one of the officers gently called out to her, breaking through the haze of her grief.
"Ms. Swift, we need to take you to the hospital for the post-mortem examination," the officer said softly, his voice tinged with sympathy.
Numbly, Taylor rose to her feet, her body moving on autopilot as she followed the officers to the hospital. Travis, his anger simmering just beneath the surface, trailed behind them, his mind consumed by thoughts of betrayal and revenge.
As they waited for the results of the examination, Taylor's thoughts turned to Joe and the life they had shared together. How could he have done this to her? How could he have leave her when he promised to stay with her for the rest of her life?
When the doctor emerged with the results, Taylor's heart sank even further. "I'm sorry to inform you, but Betty was pregnant," the doctor said gently, his words like a dagger to her already wounded heart.
Travis, on the other hand, seethed with rage, his fists clenched at his sides. The thought of Betty carrying another man's child filled him with a sickening mixture of disgust and fury. He had loved her, trusted her, and she had thrown it all away for some meaningless affair.
Taylor felt very sorry for him. She , till this point believed that the child was Travis'. She turned to Travis, tears running through her eyes,"I am sorry. It should be really paniful to lose your child and wife . I really feel sorry for you" , she tried comforting him.
Travis recoiled at her words, his anger flaring once more. "Sorry? Your sorry will change the fact that my wife was carrying your husband's child? Aren't you ashamed of him?" he spat, his voice dripping with venom. Taylor's heart pounded with indignation as Travis's accusations cut deep. "Stop it, Travis! This can't be Joe's baby. He loves me," she pleaded, her voice trembling with emotion. "Stop putting false blame on my husband."
But Travis's anger only flared in response. "For God's sake! How blind could you be?"Then why were they holding hands?" he demanded, his voice laced with bitterness. "How did my wife get pregnant? Did you not give your husband what that scoundrel wanted?"
Taylor's breath caught in her throat, her eyes stinging with tears. "I... I don't know," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "But that doesn't mean Joe cheated on me. There has to be some explanation."
Travis's gaze bore into her, his anger palpable. "Explanation? What explanation could there possibly be?" he spat, his words dripping with scorn. "Face it, Taylor. Your husband was unfaithful, just like my wife. They planned to run away together, leaving us behind like fools."
Taylor recoiled at the harsh truth of his words, her heart breaking all over again. "No," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "It can't be true. Joe wouldn't do that to me."
But even as she spoke the words, doubt gnawed at her insides. Could Joe really have betrayed her in such a cruel and callous manner? The thought was almost too much to bear.
Travis's gaze softened, his anger giving way to pity. "I'm sorry, Taylor," he said softly, his voice filled with genuine remorse. "But sometimes, the truth is harder to accept than the lies we tell ourselves."
Taylor flinched at his words, her own pain and guilt magnified by his accusations. "I loved him," she said quietly, her voice barely a whisper. "I trusted him."
Travis's eyes burned with rage. "And look where that got you," he sneered, his words cutting like a knife. "Defending a man who betrayed you in the worst possible way. You're a fool, Taylor. An absolute fool."
Enraged by his words, Taylor pushed past her grief to defend herself. "And what about you, Travis?" she shot back, her voice rising in defiance. "Why did your wife cheat on you? Were you not man enough to give her what she wanted?"
Travis's face contorted with fury at her words. "How dare you?" he roared, his voice echoing through the hospital corridor. "Don't you dare compare me to that scumbag. I loved my wife, and she betrayed me. End of story."
Their voices rose in a cacophony of anger and grief, the air thick with tension and unspoken accusations. In that moment, Taylor and Travis stood on opposite sides of a chasm, their hearts broken and their souls laid bare for all to see. And as they grappled with the harsh realities of betrayal and loss, they could only wonder what lay ahead on the long and painful road to healing.
