I stretched out on the worn leather couch in the frat house living room, a beer in hand and the remnants of last night's party scattered around me. The sun streamed through the windows, casting a harsh light on the mess we had made. My head was pounding, but it was nothing a couple of aspirin and another beer couldn't fix. My buddies were still sprawled around the room, recovering from the night's excesses.
"Yo, Theo, pass me another beer," one of my teammates, Marcus, groaned from the other couch.
"Get it yourself, man," I said with a chuckle, tossing him a cold can from the cooler at my feet. "You need exercise."
Marcus caught the can with a lazy grin. "Yeah, yeah. So, when's the next party? Heard we might hit up Delta's place tonight."
I took a long swig of my beer, considering. "Maybe. Depends if Coach has us running suicides tomorrow. I don't want to puke my guts out on the field again."
The room erupted in laughter, but then my phone buzzed on the coffee table. I grabbed it, expecting another meaningless text or notification. Instead, I saw a message from an old high school friend, one I hadn't heard from in ages.
"Hey, Theo. Heard about what's going on with your sister. You okay?"
I frowned, my heart skipping a beat. "What the hell is he talking about?" I muttered to myself.
"You say something, Theo?" Marcus asked, looking up from his phone.
I shook my head. "Nah, just got a weird message. Hold on a sec."
I dialed the number of my mother's old friend, my heart pounding with a mix of anxiety and confusion. She picked up on the second ring.
"Theo? Is everything alright?" Her voice was laced with concern, immediately picking up on the urgency in my tone.
"Mrs.Alexander, what's going on with Kylie? I got a message, but I don't understand what's happening."
There was a brief pause on the other end "Theo, I didn't want you to find out like this... Kylie, she's been through something terrible. Damien hurt her. She's staying with someone for her right now."
My blood ran cold, and I felt a surge of anger rise within me. "What do you mean Damien hurt her? What happened?"
Her voice cracked as she explained, "Kylie was abused by Damien. It's serious, Theo. She's safe now, but it's been a nightmare for her. I'm sorry you had to hear about it like this."
I felt a pang of guilt mixed with the fury boiling inside me. "I'm coming home. I need to see her, where is she staying?"
"Gina said she was staying with someone named d'angelo but didn't say where."she confessed "Be careful, Theo. We'll figure this out."
"I will. Thanks, mrs.alexander."
I ended the call and sat there for a moment, trying to process everything. The room had gone quiet, my friends sensing something serious had happened.
"You good, Theo?" Marcus asked, concern etched on his face.
"No, man," I said, standing up and grabbing my jacket. "I gotta go. Family emergency. I'll catch you guys later."
As I headed out the door, my mind was racing. How could I have been so out of touch? My little sister was in danger, and I was here partying like nothing mattered. I needed to get home, to make sure she was safe, and to deal with Damien. No one messed with my family and got away with it.
The ride home felt like an eternity, my thoughts a whirlwind of anger, guilt. I needed to be there for Kylie, to protect her and make things right. No more hiding behind the façade of the carefree college athlete. It was time to face reality and take responsibility.
I pulled up to the house late that night, the familiar sight both comforting and foreboding. Taking a deep breath, I got off my motorcycle ready to face whatever awaited me inside.
I pushed open the front door of our house, my heart pounding with a mix of anxiety and dread. The familiar scent of home greeted me, but something felt off, wrong even. The house was eerily quiet, devoid of the usual sounds of life.
"Dad? Kylie?" I called out, my voice echoing through the empty halls.
There was no response, just the silence pressing in around me. I stepped further into the house, my footsteps echoing on the hardwood floor. Everything looked the same, but it felt different somehow, like a place frozen in time.
I made my way through the rooms, searching for any sign of my family. The kitchen was deserted, the dishes piled in the sink untouched for days. The living room was no better, the couches empty and the TV silent.
Panic began to rise within me as I realized that no one was home. Where could they be? Why hadn't anyone told me they were leaving?
I rushed upstairs to Kylie's room, my heart pounding in my chest. The door creaked open, revealing an empty space, devoid of any signs of life. Her bed was neatly made, the room immaculate as if no one had been there for days.
"Kylie?" I called out again, my voice trembling with fear.
But there was no answer, just the echo of my own voice bouncing off the walls. My sister was gone, and I had no idea where she could be.
I stumbled back down the stairs, my mind reeling with questions and doubts. Where had they gone? Why hadn't anyone told me? And most importantly, were they safe?
I reached for my phone, my fingers shaking as I dialed my sister's number once again which went to voicemail. just the empty silence of a house devoid of its occupants.
As I stood there, alone in the empty house, a sense of helplessness washed over me. I didn't know where my family was, or if they were even safe. All I could do was wait, and hope, and pray that they would return home soon.
