Fukurō's eyes go wide. Was she taken by surprise? Was there a competitor willing to kill off the other participants in order to survive? Whatever it was, the culprit was silent. Fukurō couldn't obviously hear literal heartbeats, but she could have heard footsteps, splashes, things of sorts.
But there was one thing Fukurō would be sure of. She was going to fall off of the cliff.
'Shit.'
Minorikoji grabs on to Fukurō's wrist, sword in his other hand. What should he do? He could kill the demon first, but then Fukurō would fall. He could pull Fukurō back up, but then the demon could kill them before he had the chance.
"Look, Fukurō-san. I need you to hold on for a bit, alright? I'm gonna think of a plan, and.." He says in a rush, looking around frantically.
'Great. A demon? Now Tsuyoshi-san's going to be stressed, and he won't have clear thinking.' Fukurō tries to find a rim to balance on, the sole of her foot scraping on the nonexistent stones in the shower of water. She was practically swimming through the tides, the panic eating up inside of her. It was only when she looked under her she spoke.
"You have to let me go, Tsuyoshi-san."
"What? You're crazy. I'm not letting you go!" Looking in disbelief, his grasp only firmed. "You're going to make it out here alive, and I don't care if I'm going to lose an arm because of it!"
"I'll meet you down there, alright? Kill that demon quick."
'Down there?! Like hell?! Godamn it, Fukurō-san, I'm not going to let you believe that!' He could feel his hold slipping away, Fukurō inches away from her demise. "Don't show off too much, alright? Just enough to kill it."
Fukurō pushes the base of her feet off of the edge of the waterfall, pulling her wrist back from Minorikoji. He lets out a sharp gasp, watching as Fukurō disappears among the roots and water coating the cliff.
"NO! FUKURŌ-SAN!"
Not once had he witnessed a death right before his eyes. Well yes, his own grandfather had passed on when he was younger, but it was from a sickness, and he wasn't there to see it while it happened. Now he knew what it was like to lose a person who had taken care of you with such care.
'Kill the demon quick. Okay.' The pristine water reflects onto Minorikoji's Nichirin Blade, making it look as majestic as the morning sky.
"Don't worry, Fukurō-san. I'll avenge you!"
* * *
Minorikoji looks at the fish-like demon lurking in the water, its teeth like those of a shark. Blinking its inky eyes, an angered hiss comes out from the demon's teeth. "... You ruined... Easy kill.." The demon says in broken speech, ".. Now... kill you..!" The demon lunges for Minorikoji, it's fish tail propelling it forward.
"Water Breathing— First Form: Water Surface Slash!" Minorikoji unsheathes his weapon a bit too early, only barely slitting the demon's neck and failing to behead the demon. Getting closer, he preforms the same form again. When he only slits its shoulder, he tenses up it frustration. Damn it, he should have spent more time training instead of slacking off!
'Come on, Minorikoji! For Fukurō-san's sake!'
The demon shrieks, it's beady eyes becoming as darkened as black mulberries. Cupping a hand over its crimson-stained shoulder, it was clear as water that it was disappointed and enraged.
"You... Weak... Weaker than.. other child. But still... Annoying..!"
The demon lunges a second time, the scales coated around its body like those of a graceful koi fish. This demon was anything but graceful though, its moves more so of an ailing cat. Extending its arms, the blood drips down its shoulder, dying the water a deep rose.
