only a fool would be foolish enough to believe that love potions actually exist. apparently the group of people around you that have willingly chosen to pay attention to the conman that insists on advertising his product are foolish.
they're all fools blinded by him.
he's dressed like some mad scientist, but he has this innocent look to him. his hair falls in waves over his face, but it doesn't stop you from noticing the pair of glasses that he wears on his face. you're not entirely sure if the glasses are functional or non-functional. either way, they seem to be working for him.
they definitely make him seem like a genius, which is exactly the look that he's going for.
"what kind of idiot would belie-" you find yourself airing out your concerns, but your cousin excitedly cuts you off.
"how much do you think he's selling that love potion for?"
"melody, you've got to be-"
"twenty dollars is far too cheap, but two hundred dollars is too expensive." melody looks at the potion like it's magical or something.
somehow the crowd of people grows even larger, growing to a size that the mall might not be able to accommodate. it's only a matter of time before there's a blockade that's formed.
"don't waste your money, melody." you say to her, pulling at her arm to get her to move.
"i wouldn't be wasting my money. there's this girl that i like. i think that she likes me, too, but i'm not sure. if i gave her this love potion, we would finally be together." melody says, keeping her feet planted and her eyes locked on the potion.
she is immovable. you can pull at her with all the strength that you own, but she wouldn't even flinch.
"how much does it cost?" someone in the crowd shouts at the conman.
"the potion costs one hundred dollars per bottle." the conman gracefully responds, not raising his voice past a calm volume. "we just need someone to test the potion out to see just how fast-acting it is."
there it is!
there's the catch.
as soon as he says this, a sudden silence falls over the crowd. it's actually eerie how silent the crowd has gotten.
you can hear a pen drop, just before melody is lifting your hand from your side. "my cousin will do it!"
"melody, i don't want to be some crash test dummy for his terrible product." you hiss.
all of the people that surround you don't bother to hide their shock. they look at you like you're some brave hero, but you're not.
you're just a person who's been roped up in some terrible science experiment.
this, right now, is the moment where you should stand up for yourself. your eyes can't help but dart between the conman and the potion that he's holding in his left hand.
now that the sea of people have parted themselves down the middle, it takes nothing for him to meet your eyes. somehow, he can't seem to keep his eyes focused on yours for too long, since he looks away first.
you scoff at him, at his indirectness.
how can a conman be so unconfident?
suddenly, you feel a wave of something overtake you. in this moment, you're nothing but reckless when you speak. "i'll do it. i'll take the potion."
melody startles. she looks at you like you've said the craziest thing she's ever heard. "i was just joking, (y/n). you don't have to-"
"i'll take the potion, so that i can show you and everyone here that he," you say, pointing at the salesman. "is nothing more than a conman with a get-rich quick agenda."
for the first time today, you see a smile split the conman's face wide open. somehow, he looks even more innocent and carefree than he did before. you don't know why, but you end up realizing that your heart is racing.
is it because of his smile or is it because of adrenaline?
you're not exactly sure, but you do have one thing you're dying to know.
"who is this guy?" you think to yourself.
