you never understood what people meant when they said that fear is palpable.
you just couldn't wrap your mind around how someone could wear fear on their face. it wasn't until you felt your heart beating against your chest that you realized that fear is palpable. you knew that wonwoo could read your fear. in fact, you'd bet that he was glad to see that he inspired it.
"help me! there's a vampire who's trying to kill me!" you screeched at the top of your lungs.
you kicked dirt in wonwoo's eyes when you bolted, but that's not what caused him to double over in pain. the kind of pain that stole his balance and brought him to his knees was so excruciating that it couldn't have been caused that simply. this kind of pain was abnormal.
wonwoo wondered if the girl he was talking to was a witch who cosplayed as a teenage girl. he was convinced that you put a hex on him somehow.
"help! there's a vampire that's after me!" you called for help.
running felt like a pointless thing to do when a vampire had you set in their sight, but you ran. you weren't known to be a fast runner, but you practically flew through the forest just to stay alive.
this was the first time in years that you felt that your life was worth fighting for.
"there's a-"
you came into contact with a strong, unbreakable surface. since night had fallen, aside from the few stars in the sky, you were surrounded by darkness. you assumed that you ran into a tree, until you realized that you hadn't fallen from the crash.
"where's the vampire?" a strong, booming voice echoed in your ears.
the voice that belonged to your savior was mighty, but not as mighty as his arms. it was due to them that you weren't on the ground.
"he's..." the man released you. then, pulled out a flashlight.
"he was at the cemetery when i ran away from him. i don't know if he's still there or if he used his flashflying skills to get away, but you've got to find him." you explained, while the man assessed you for injuries."you can't let him get away like i did. you've got to catch him, so that he doesn't hurt anyone else."
after you rushed through your sentences, you realized who the man was. the numerous soldiers behind him should've been a dead giveaway, but you were too frightened to notice their presence.
he's a vampire hunter, a powerful one. that would explain why he's in charge of the soldiers that stood behind him.
"we'll find him, alright? i promise that we will." the man said to you, then gave directives to all of the other soldiers that must follow his command. "start heading towards the cemetery and stay vigilant."
"yes, sir." the collective said with such fervor that you flinched.
just like their uniforms, their footfalls were coordinated. each of them fell together to create a menacing cadence.
if you'd had a conscience, you might've felt sorry for the vampire.
"shouldn't you be going with them?"
"yeah, i should, but you're holding onto me like your life depends on it. so, i figured that i should make sure that you were okay before leaving."
you didn't even realize that you were clinging onto this man like a small child.
"oh, my god! i'm so sorry." you apologized, as you tried to respect his personal space.
you leaned against a tree that was a few feet away from the man. he looked down at the ground, seeming to check his shoes. however, you caught him trying to subdue a smile.
"what's your name?" the man asked you.
"i'm (y/n)." you admitted. "what's yours?"
"my name is-"
a lone soldier ran up to the man. "sir, we need backup."
the man shook his head once, then he slid the flashlight into a compartment in his belt. his hands searched until they found a small, compact device.
"here, use this to get home. just type in your address and this will take you there." he handed you a placejumper, a teleportation device that'll take you home with just the click of a button.
"wait, aren't you going to tell me your name before you go?" you caught his arm, eager to stop him.
"i-"
"sir, he's getting away!" the soldier cried out.
"i've got to go." the man said, as he looked at your hand.
you never thought you'd say this to anyone ever since you lost your family, but the words didn't feel foreign on your lips."thank you for saving my life."
"you're welcome, (y/n)." the man smiled.
